Book Description

Do you know much about the Bible? Have you ever read this verse?

Deuteronomy 25:11-12 If two men fight and one’s wife tries to help by grabbing the testicles of the other man, her hand will be cut off without pity. (Living Bible)

The Holy Bible is chock-full of fascinating, sometimes shocking and almost never discussed lexis, verse after verse you will never hear in Sunday School.

A distinctive Bible study, Holy Enigma! takes a humorous look at the most ancient stories of the Near East. It introduces candor, humor, and commonsense into a careful assessment of “God’s word.” In a heartfelt desire to spawn interest in reading the Bible, the author opens Pandora’s Box by questioning the divinity of some of the most bizarre text. Holy Enigma! is sure to astonish and entertain while inspiring deep reflection for believers and non-believers alike.

From the author:

This book was three years in the making. It evolved from a humor book, to a theology book, to a philosophy book, to somewhere in between. Because I take my religion seriously and have great respect for the Holy Bible, I’ve re-written this book so many times as to be haunted by the challenge. All my life I’ve heard baseless arguments trying to explain away troublesome Bible issues, and it dawned on me that no one had thought to ask God about the Good Book. I’ve come to believe the Creator wants us to read, think, take note and stand up for His side of the story. I concluded it might be helpful to lay all the most controversial passages on the table and let readers decide for themselves. Chapters 1, 2 and 3 take on the dogma of “biblical inerrancy.” Chapters 4, 5 and 6 cover many of the most troublesome verses in the Old and New Testaments. Chapter 7 briefs the entire book of Revelation, and Chapter 8 offers a prayer of reconciliation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Fascinating May 31, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A wonderfully close look at the Bible, Holy Enigma lays it all out there for you. Passages are shown together making it easy to see where writer bias or simply botched translation have created stunning contradictions. A fabulous, thought-provoking work that I'm pleased I found. What I love most about this work is the desire I now have to dig into my Bible again, take a look at all those highlighted Bible Study passages it contains, and gain a deeper understanding of the words God wants to speak to my heart.

Holy Enigma! is a one of a kind book - clearly, the author did a great deal of research to support this work and it is absolutely intriguing to think that so many of us who have attended church services most of our lives, could have missed so much of the content that is highlighted in this book. Most facinating to me, was the history behind how the texts of the Bible changed hands and how the translations may have significantly impacted the final version that we see today. While the content of Holy Enigma! reflects the detailed research that was done to put this book together, the author takes a light-hearted, humorous approach in presenting what he found. After reading this, its easy to realize the importance of taking time to read the Bible and not just listen to Sunday sermons (as that is really just one person's interpretation of the text). Reading the history of the Bible's translations over the years really gives me a broader understanding of how the Bible was put together. The author's approach is refreshing - understanding the Bible's history at an academic level and digesting the fact that various religous leaders may have altered the original meanings of the words does not mean that you question your Faith or the existance of God. In fact, it helped me appreciate the fact that God's word still reaches us today via the Bible, even though Man actively participated in changing elements of the text for political reasons.

I bought this book several years ago in hard copy and am very excited to see that its available for Kindle - it will make it easier to share some of the cool, lesser known quotes from the bible with the ladies in my biblestudy when I am on the go.

1.0 out of 5 stars silly September 27, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The author lists a number of reasons to acknowledge that the "Bible" is a pastiche of the works of numerous men writing over a long period of time. That they contradict one another frequently depending on when they write. That the portrait of "God" in the "Bible" is unappealing. Then he concludes that the story is fundamentally true. He tries to be much too cute. The book is overpriced at $2.99.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trims the fat, closes the gaps. June 22, 2012
By Sean K.
Format:Paperback
Ladies and Gentlemen, here is a book that you will find will give you a true gift. The author doesn't make fun of much in the book, as he seeks to close the gaps between the zealots who will tell you nothing in the Bible is wrong and that all is the true Word of God and the atheists who tell you its all bull. Its neither and thats the key to really understanding the bible and your personal faiths. The author uses humor including dialogs with "God" to "keep him in line" with his religious views. I think a solid requirement for ANYONE here to challenge the author on his intentions is to read the bible, cover to cover, and in at least two different translations. The author has done this for you and will present as much context as he can to both share the bizarre verse and to not just toss out random verses that sound strange alone, but require other verses to make sense. Excellent book and a must read for bible thumpers, atheists and everyone in between.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be glad you weren't a Biblical woman! May 29, 2010

Holy Cow! I never knew all that stuff was in the Bible. If you would like to take a humorous look at some of the most controversial passages in the Bible, this book is for you. Women had it rough back in Bible times. I especially enjoyed the two chapters on Women of the Old and New Testaments.

5.0 out of 5 stars I found this to be a GREAT book! August 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a book that once you started reading, you didn't want to put down. VERY interesting and presented with humor, which in my opinion just added to the book. A great book!

I wrote the above review and would like to add that since then, have taken the author's advice and actually read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. I would like to thank the author for giving me a "jump-start" to reading the Bible, by reading his book before-hand.
