More than Hip-Hop, this IS a journey...,

This review is from: Enigma (Audio CD)
This album is a TRIP. More than just beats and rhymes (which ARE tight), it also has mood and atmosphere, two things not commonly found on a hip-hop album. Make no mistake, this IS an album-something to be absorbed from front to back with headphones, or even just driving at night. This has got some serious Pink Floyd trippiness goin on, thanks to the involvement of a guitarist who is featured throughout, Rob Miranda. Haunting female vocals and strange synth lines also add to the mix...just check out the track "Desperation" featuring Scarub and Murs-if you don't feel this, I feel for you. This is one for music lovers, not just Hip-Hop heads. I'm totally impressed-Eligh is an artist, and he has indeed created a masterpiece.

missing something...,
By
This review is from: Enigma (Audio CD)
After the positive progression that resulted in "Poltergeist" I had high expectations for this album, and so far I'm feeling like something is lacking here. Out of the 18 tracks there are only a few that Eligh actually has flows on, and a majority of the instrumentals don't seem to go anywhere. However, I did just get this today, so I haven't fully absorbed it. And it is definately better than the majority of the crap that comes out these days. I'm curious to see what other heads have to say...

Absolutely brilliant,

In the face of a fledgling hip hop industry saturated with cliché and triteness, Eligh offers a piece of work that is completely unexpected, completely different, and completely masterful. Eligh's usual tight flows adorn beats and melodies reminiscent of traditional Living Legends on the excellent closing track, "Desperation" in which he's joined by his 3MG mates, Murs and Scarub. Yet the album will also take you on a slightly haunting, synth-based journey through instrumentals such as "Dali Lama Lullaby". In fact 10 of the 18 tracks are instrumentals, which makes the album a perfect backdrop for a quiet get-together, or a long drive to nowhere. Listeners are treated to an orgy of different sounds, textures, layers and new forms of what can now be labeled as hip hop, which regretfully could be hard for an impatient listener to fully appreciate. However patience will be rewarded greatly with one of the best hip hop albums in recent memory, regardless of sub-genre. It's very rare that a hip hop album can so effectively push the envelope and redefine what can be referred to as hip hop, yet Eligh pulls it off perfectly, with stunning grace.
