More than Hip-Hop, this IS a journey...,
By
This review is from: Enigma (Audio CD)
This album is a TRIP. More than just beats and rhymes (which ARE tight), it also has mood and atmosphere, two things not commonly found on a hip-hop album. Make no mistake, this IS an album-something to be absorbed from front to back with headphones, or even just driving at night. This has got some serious Pink Floyd trippiness goin on, thanks to the involvement of a guitarist who is featured throughout, Rob Miranda. Haunting female vocals and strange synth lines also add to the mix...just check out the track "Desperation" featuring Scarub and Murs-if you don't feel this, I feel for you. This is one for music lovers, not just Hip-Hop heads. I'm totally impressed-Eligh is an artist, and he has indeed created a masterpiece.

missing something...,

This review is from: Enigma (Audio CD)
After the positive progression that resulted in "Poltergeist" I had high expectations for this album, and so far I'm feeling like something is lacking here. Out of the 18 tracks there are only a few that Eligh actually has flows on, and a majority of the instrumentals don't seem to go anywhere. However, I did just get this today, so I haven't fully absorbed it. And it is definately better than the majority of the crap that comes out these days. I'm curious to see what other heads have to say...

In the face of a fledgling hip hop industry saturated with cliché and triteness, Eligh offers a piece of work that is completely unexpected, completely different, and completely masterful. Eligh's usual tight flows adorn beats and melodies reminiscent of traditional Living Legends on the excellent closing track, "Desperation" in which he's joined by his 3MG mates, Murs and Scarub. Yet the album will also take you on a slightly haunting, synth-based journey through instrumentals such as "Dali Lama Lullaby". In fact 10 of the 18 tracks are instrumentals, which makes the album a perfect backdrop for a quiet get-together, or a long drive to nowhere. Listeners are treated to an orgy of different sounds, textures, layers and new forms of what can now be labeled as hip hop, which regretfully could be hard for an impatient listener to fully appreciate. However patience will be rewarded greatly with one of the best hip hop albums in recent memory, regardless of sub-genre. It's very rare that a hip hop album can so effectively push the envelope and redefine what can be referred to as hip hop, yet Eligh pulls it off perfectly, with stunning grace.

This was my first introduction to Eligh, having heard(or rather listed) his name dropped on the internet. I decided to check him out, and going to the local record store, found Enigma(that being the only Eligh release they had). When I popped it in I was stunned, half the tracks were tight instrumentals and there was a live guitarist jammin away on some tracks. And furthermore, Eligh's flow and lyrics are dope! It turns out that Eligh produced all the beats on the album, and they are equally tight and atmospheric. This was a great buy, especially since these days I am a little weary about purchasing CD's from artists I have never heard of(sometimes only half of the album is good and the rest is filler). But with Eligh, everything about this album is mysterious and top notch. Eligh's lyrics are both intellectual, infectous and positive. I highly recommend this album to hip hop lovers and musician lovers worldwide.

There is a reason this CD is called "Enigma",

To tell the truth, this was actually the first CD that I had heard from "The Man, The Myth, The Legend", known as Eligh. But I must definitely say that this is one of the best hip-hop/whatever albums that I have ever heard. Knowing the relative straight-forwardness that Eligh and the rest of the Legends have taken, I was actually quite pleased to know that this CD would throw off people who just don't understand it. Having done previous material in this vein before, Eligh felt it was necessary to do an album that showed his technical skills off more than his lyrical skills which, if anyone has heard any of his other CD's or tracks, will know that he is nothing less than amazing. From songs dealing with the music industry as a whole, life on the streets and a love lost that caused it, to an interstellar journey of mass proportions, the wonderful lyrical content is by no means in short supply. And the people who are giving this CD 1's and 2's should be ashamed of themselves for not seeing what this album is really about.
The bottom line: Ignore the negative press and experience this journey for yourself. It may seem disjointed, but only to the uninitiated or uneducated. Another fine effort from Eligh indeed.

This is definitely a different take on things. The reviewer before me mentioned Eligh doesn't rip it up on all the tracks and that is true, but the instrumentals are tight. They provide a good transition between flows. This feels more like an experience or a journey than just another CD with a bunch of tracks that go nowhere. Definitely worth checking out.

Too much hype for Eligh,

Eligh, a producer and emcee for the Living Legends busted out his own CD in early 2005. Although this was thought to be the coming out of Eligh, it fell well short of what i thought it would be. Only about half of his songs have him singing or rapping, and the other ones are just instramentals. The last song is the highlight of this CD and who ever doesnt feel this song, has no love for the UNDAGROUND.
Top Trax: #7 Dali Lama Lullaby, #8 Who Else,#17 New Eyes, #18 Desperation (feat Murs and Scarub)

Not Enough Singing,
By
This review is from: Enigma (Audio CD)
It is obvious listening to LL CDs that Eligh is very talented, and I was resultingly hyped to get Enigma, which I had heard was his best CD. If that is true, consider me disappointed. Most of the CD is filled with odd beats and background music and repetitive melodies, without any trace of Eligh at all. I realize that some people enjoy that type of thing, and if you do this CD is for you. But if you want to hear a CD full of the Eligh that you just can't get enough of on Classic, this isn't where you'll find it. I'm disappointed.
