Book Description

After surviving ancient booby traps, deadly puzzles, and torture-happy imperial marines, cryptanalyst Tikaya Komitopis can’t wait to return home, even if that means explaining to her family how she came to love Fleet Admiral Rias Starcrest, the empire’s most notorious commander and the man responsible for the decimation of her people during the war.

Tikaya and Rias believe they’ll have several calm weeks at sea to mull over the problem of irate citizens and horrified parents, but the ship they board is on the run. The captain has acquired a mysterious stolen artifact… and the owners want it back. When he learns of Tikaya’s background, he urges her to decode its secrets, implying her life—and everyone else’s—might be forfeit if she fails.

Engima is a 15,000-word short story set after the events in Encrypted.

Okay, so that sounds like the set up to a very complicated joke... Kind of. Maybe it would be awesome - like Enigma. This short story is TOTALLY awesome.

It picks up shortly after Encrypted ends, with Rias and Tikaya looking to book passage South. Tikaya is tasked with identifying and learning how to use a Scientific (mental sciences, if you haven't read Ms Buroker's other work yet, read "magic") flute, while Rias is set to work doing anything and everything to keep him away from her.

I loved the flute, I loved the mystery behind it. I love Tikaya & Rias together - their mutual ability to start a lecture at any and every chance is hilarious.

This was a wonderful way to fill the void between Emperor's Edge stories, as well as giving us a refresher on these two before Decrypted comes out!

Did I mention, it's AWESOME. :D

3.0 out of 5 stars Alert! This is a short story! January 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Apparently, when I ordered this, I missed the short story part. I love the characters continuing from "Encrypted" and their new adventure was entertaining, but sadly terribly short. I was surprised by the abrupt ending, even for a short story. I also felt like the tale was a bit contrived, possibly to fit the format, but disappointing none the less.

5.0 out of 5 stars A riddle, a romance and a ride December 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A nice story for those who wanted more after Encrypted -- like me. Like other reviewers, I want to know what happens next -- specifically when our hero and heroine get back to her home.
For those not familiar with Lindsay's series, start with Encrypted. You will meet a resourceful, funny, imperfect girl who has a brain that won't quit. She falls in love with a mysterious stranger who seems to be able to command situations and troops with ease, even though when she meets him he has been dragged from a Siberia like exile covered in hair and filth. In this story, they continue their adventure, have a strange artifact to solve, meet noble bad guys and nasty good guys and only a few things blow up.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun, and not filled with a lot of the ... October 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read several of Lindsay's books, bought at least six of them, and look forward to buying more. Although most of her characters are similar (she tends to use strong female lead characters), they are always fairly well written and have decent plots and lots of action. I think that young readers, as well as older adults, will find her books interesting, fun, and not filled with a lot of the drivel that tends to fill so many books nowadays.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun short piece July 8, 2014

Great series, and this shorter piece is a nice interlude between full length novels. There are touches of romance, magic, engineering, and even scifi in this fantasy series.

5.0 out of 5 stars adventure May 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Follows Encrypted, before Decrypted. I read it after the latter and still found it enjoyable. I'd like to read more about their adventures now that I've gotten to know them.
