A problem of Production,
By
This review is from: Enigmatic: The String Quartet Tribute To Radiohead (Audio CD)
I've actually seen The Section Quartet perform Radiohead songs live, in a small club venue, and the results there just blew me away. The passion and reverence the group had for the songs combined with the power that came with these wooden instruments rocking together in harmony together put a vibration through my body and mind. It was a fun night out, and if they come by your neck of the woods, I recommend that you check it out.
Even though this is the same group playing the same arrangements on this CD, I can't recommend it. The laziness and insufficiency of the production quality of this music is a crime. It sounds as if it were recorded with one microphone pointed at the group from across a soundproof room. Without individually mic'ed instruments or a vibrant stereo mix, the music comes across as unbelievably flat. The sonic quality of the individual instruments are totally gone, particularly in the lower ranges, as the pulsing energy of the cello parts don't even get a quiver out of my bass speakers. Please Section Quartet: go back and try this again, with a proper music recording setup this time... your music deserves it.

Totally uninspired. They put Radiohead to a string quartet but there's no personality to it, they've just drained Yorke's voice away and replaced it with a replica on strings. If only they had brought their own vision to the work instead of trying to reproduce it on different instruments. To coin a phrase: there ain't nothin like the real thing.

This is a great CD for anyone who is familiar with the work of Radiohead. A good way to tell how great a modern band is, is to listen to them performed in a classical setting. Most modern groups are repetitive and dry, while Radiohead's blend of classic chords and intense sound experimentation are amplified and then reinterpreted in a new form. Yorkes voice comes across as an important ingredient to this recipe, as it does in their music normally, but in this arena, it gives you the inconsistency to create emotion without words and covey the mood. Two friends of mine who hate Radiohead heard this in my car and asked for a copy, and when I told them it was Radiohead, they purchaced not only this CD but a few of their regular CD's. Also check out some of the other Radiohead CD's for strings and even piano. Enjoy. -Joe

The way these string quartet tributes go is that you either love them or hate 'em. "Enigmatic: The String Quartet Tribute To Radiohead" is a worthwhile endeavor. As far as my bias goes, I also adored "Strung Out On OK Computer: The String Quartet Tribute To Radiohead." Both produced by Vitamin records, the projects share the same musical vision. The arrangements are straight forward but well done. So while there won't be any epiphanies, the music is deeply satisfying. My confession is that while I know "OK Computer" inside out, I'm not too familiar with the rest of Radiohead's discography. Considering that I don't know many of the originals, it is remarkable that "Enigmatic" has resonated so strongly. If you're open-minded about both the string quartet thing and Radiohead, "Enigmatic" is a safe bet.

I bought this CD right before christmas for my mom. The package arrived on time but instead of The String Quartet's Tribute to Radiohead it was the String Quartet's Tribute to Celtic Woman. That really sucked. So I emailed them and asked them to send the correct CD, that is all I wanted, but instead they let me keep the wrong CD for free (which I didn't even want anyways, and was promptly thrown away) gave me a refund, and never sent the correct CD! I definitely will not be purchasing anymore CDs from them because you never know which one you will get!

a young korean boy ran past my stoop yesterday morning, he was full of the wee and vinegar that makes children climb trees and wrestle coons by the lake. He tripped on my pottet begonias and went headfirst into a row of daylillies waiting to be put into the ground. He was out cold for 3 days, and i listened to this cd, which he had in his german fanny pack. I can't decide if the vomit made me listen, or listening made me vomit. Either way it was delicious, i'll have seconds....mmmmm maybe thirds. oh dear im naughty, somebody punish me.
