Wonderful!,
By Armchair Interviews (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fix It And Enjoy It Cookbook (Paperback)
If your grandma was a great cook and wrote a cookbook, it would look a little something like this book--great for beginners and advanced cooks alike. It does not tell you how to cook, but gives a full variety of recipes that are easy and scrumptious looking, as well as crowd pleasing.
The layout clean and organized and does not startle the reader with cutesy or bright, hard-to-read fonts. Since this cookbook has recipes collected from different people, it reminds me of Southern women getting together on a Sunday afternoon to swap their treasured meal cards. Fix-It and Enjoy-It gives recipes for just about everything from Texas caviar to homemade ice cream and breads. My mouth literally watered when I looked at all 675 of these recipes. The only thing I did not like was, there were no pictures. For the price to eat out at a restaurant, one can have this book jammed pack with meal that will satisfy even picky palates. This book is really a gem among the rocks. Each recipe has an ingredient list that is uncomplicated with easy-to-find ingredients. Phyllis Pellman Good humors her readers with a personal anecdote. I cannot believe that the author of so many cookbooks, including the great Fix-it and Forget-it series, once did not like or know how to cook! Armchair Interviews says: The author is very encouraging and says, "If I can cook, you can too."

This is a wonderful reference, whether you're brand new to cooking or like myself, have been around the kitchen for 50 years. Most all of the recipes use ingredients that you normally have in your cupboards. When I get a new cookbook, I read them like a novel and check the ones I want to try. There's so many checks, I don't know where to start!

Great recipes, that are easy to follow. Easy enough that if you have never cooked before you could use this book and have the meals come out right.

I have several of Phyllis Pellman Good's books for slow-cookers. Imagine my delight when I spotted this one featuring all kinds of recipes for the stovetop and oven.
On a weekly basis, this will be one of the cookbooks I use for my dinner menus. The recipes are tried and true. They have easy-to-find ingredients and many include variations for the more adventurous cook to try out. When I have made a dish using a recipe from any cookbook, I make a note whether it was good or not. I also may include my own variations. This book is full of my own notes stating how wonderful this or that recipe is. The only item missing is a picture for the recipe but if pictures were included in any of her books, she wouldn't be able to give us so many great recipes in one edition.

A terrific culinary reference (book details),

If this is your concern: "I need an easy (fill in the blank with some common dish) recipe for tonight!" ...then this book is guaranteed to work for you.
Here you will find 675 easy recipes for home-cooking dishes, including entrees, side dishes, and desserts. The source of these recipes is a plethora of talented home cooks from all over the USA. Taking a typical recipe, the potato salad on page 174 is second to none. I found it to be remarkably simple to prepare and the end result was one of the most delicious potato salads I've ever tried anywhere... and believe me, as a career park ranger, I've tasted a LOT of potato salad! A bonus in this book was that I had a choice of three potato salads, the two alternatives being "Easy Red Potato Salad" and "Sweet Potato Salad." All dishes are pretty much like this and they all use common ingredients. You'll find plenty of new recipes in here, dishes such as "Brandied Peach Chicken," "Creamy Crab-Stuffed Shells," and "Butter Rum Bananas." But all the basic dishes are in here too. Is this a specialty or gourmet cooking cookbook? No, but it doesn't purport to be. These are recipes designed to feed a family some really tasty food, without taking too much time or hassle, fairly economically, day after day. In all there are 284 pages, about three dishes per page, and the recipes are nicely categorized. Additionally, these recipes are easy to read as you cook. If the book has any shortcomings, there are perhaps two minor ones. We don't know in advance how people might have rated these individual recipes so you're more or less making them "on trust" until you get to try the finished product. The several I have made so far have all been very good so that's a good indicator as to the quality of them all. The second issue is that there are no photos or illustrations of the dishes; however, in home-cooking this is not so important a feature as it is in gourmet cooking so I didn't find this to be a huge shortcoming. I should mention that if you like this type of cookbook, you might also be pleased with one of my own favorites: Mr. Food Cooks Like Mama Definitely recommended.

This is a great cookbook for the "normal" everyday cook. I have tried 7 receipes and each has been delicious! I have had all the ingredients at home (didn't have to run for something special). I have many cookbooks and this is one of my favorites! Enjoy!
