Editorial Reviews

NEA Jazz Master Bobby Hutcherson makes his triumphant return to Blue Note Records, where the virtuoso vibraphonist started his career in the early 60s, with the superb album, Enjoy the View. The vibrant session is produced by Blue Note president Don Was. Recorded by an all-star collective of saxophonist David Sanborn and organist Joey DeFrancesco, and featuring drummer Billy Hart, the Hutcherson-sparked group plays seven original compositions that range from cool, gentle grooves to fiery outbursts of exuberance. At heart, the album soars thanks to the divine musical alchemy among the performers an assemblage of veteran artists who play at the top of their game.

'I'm happy to have a recording come out on Blue Note,' says the 73-year-old Hutcherson. 'I've had a long-term association with the label. I'm thrilled to be back here.'

Was concurs: 'Bobby not only has an incredible history with Blue Note as the preeminent voice of the vibes, but he still remains the giant of the instrument.'
His stellar live quartet album Without a Net one of 2013 s top jazz albums Enjoy the View stands as a valuable addition to the classic catalog of the most-respected and longest-running jazz label in the world. 'Our goal has been to maintain the underlying aesthetic that has governed Blue Note throughout its 75 years,' says Was. 'It's very poetic to be doing it with the original guys who helped to define the label. For Bobby, it's more than coming full circle. It's also about guiding the course for the future.'

In the tradition of the Blue Note label, founded by Alfred Lion in 1938, a day of rehearsal was scheduled preceding the recording of Enjoy the View at Ocean Way Studios in Hollywood. Even though it was the first time Sanborn had played with Hutcherson and Hart, the chemistry was immediate. 'Don decided to have the rehearsal session recorded,' says DeFrancesco. 'It's a good thing because we decided that three of the tunes Dave s Delia and two of my new songs written for the date, Don Is and You were the best takes for the album.'

DeFrancesco proved to be the common denominator of the session, having played with Hutcherson for some ten years, with Sanborn and Hart, with whom he has enjoyed a long history, including his second album as a leader (1990 s Where Were You?). In New York when Was first came on board at Blue Note Records, after dinner he serendipitously dropped into the Blue Note club where DeFrancesco and Sanborn were performing. 'I'd known Dave for some 25 years and I knew Joey as one of the best Hammond B3 organ players in the world,' Was says. 'I just sat there and the set was so relaxed and grooving. I loved what I heard. So after the two sets, I met Joey upstairs and asked him what he thought about doing an album with Bobby and Dave. That s how it started.'

What a great collaboration! To my knowledge this is not a working band. It appears the musicians got together only for this recording and will not be making live appearances. If they did tour I would love to see them. Whoever is responsible for the choices of players is very smart . I am not a jazz scholar so I cannot accurately use terms like "traditional", "post-bop" etc., but my music library includes 40 Blue Note CDs from the sixties and seventies including several Bobby Hutcherson albums. My ear recognizes the good stuff and Enjoy the View is good stuff !!
Bobby's vibes do not over dominate and are beautifully integrated into each track. My estimation of David Sanborn has gone up a notch as he plays with a combination of old school skill and sensitivity. And Joey DeFrancesco ! Wow! Instead of the piano as on the old Blue Note sessions we get a very cool organ sound. He is one of the best playing today. And despite owning a number of his albums I did not know he played trumpet . He plays the instrument very well. And Billy Hart holds down the drum seat with perfection.
Enjoy the View and the new Brian Blade Fellowship release are the best jazz albums so far in 2014.

I like this album a lot. It is not the "wild and crazy jazz music" with adventures improvisations. If I want that I go back to early records on Blue Note with Hutcherson. And why should it sounds like 50 years ago? This is a gentle side of Bobbie Hutcherson which is as demanding as it can sound uninspiring and unexciting. But it does not. It is a good and varying mix of tunes and the arrangements are beautiful and the musicians really put a joint effort to present it. Joey De Francesco is a master of colours and so is Billy Hart. In the seventies, David Sanborn was one my heroes on the fusion stage. I have had a little bit harder to go crazy with him on more acoustic jazz. But on this albu he shine a bit more, not for his improvisation - here he is more a painter that gives a special mode to the soundtage. And then of course Bobby himself with his unique tone and vibe. A true master. Not a masterwork but a very good and enjoyable album that gives a nice mood.

I came across this recent release by accident and what a pleasant surprise. I believe this is the first CD since "Skyline" where Bobby plays with a saxophonist and David Sanborn does an admirable job. Interestingly, on both Bobby's "Somewhere In the Night" and Joey's "Organic Vibe" I miss the tone of a string bass, despite Joey's amazing ability with the B-3 and his ambidextrous/ambipedal talents, but I am happy to say I don't feel that way with "Enjoy the View". Perhaps it is the quality of the production. It could also be the drumming of Billy Hart that makes the difference as I have seen Bobby and Joey live a couple of times before.

While the ensemble includes three distinguished soloists, there is lots of space in the recording. It is never cluttered or busy. The quartet lays down some awesome grooves whether it be newer material or revisiting the rich Hutcherson catalogue.

Sure I am biased, I am a big fan of Bobby's music. I have seen him live many times with some incredible musicians and I am happy to say "Enjoy the View" holds up. I have booked a trip to NYC to catch Bobby at the Lincoln Centre in November and while he will undoubtedly have moved on to something new and fresh by then, I will relish in the delight of this quartet's music.

This CD is great. It's a bit of a departure from the smooth jazz that David Sanborn usually plays. Put this CD on the next time you have a dinner party.

Give it a chance before you bash it.

Weirdly listed as a Dave Sanborn album in places but this collaboration is better viewed as a Hutcherson project - and he is in fine form. The album is flawless. Enjoy!
