Editorial Reviews

Review

"The illustrations in Enjoy Your Cells are fantastic....this is no boring biology textbook. Rolph's illustrations are rich with color and many have entertaining text bubbles....The book is jam-packed with information for both kids and parents. I'm a biologist and I learned new things from the book. Balkwill works hard to make all this material accessible to young minds...The book certainly made a lasting impression on my daughter....She...even asked to bring the book to her preschool. It's pretty neat to see how Enjoy Your Cells has given her a new way of looking at the living world." - The Washington Post

Wow, this book was not what I expected!

Let me give you some background about myself. I have a B.A. in Biology, a B.A. in Chemistry, and a M.S. in Chemistry (Research). I have taken an entire class on the cell and researched cellular membranes in graduate school. I bought this book for my children and to share with the children at their school through a science club that I am teaching.

In addition to a little bit about cell function there is a multi page blurb about sexual reproduction. They do not get graphic and talk about body actions, but it does talk about the sperm and ovum from dad and mom. One of the pictures shows one sperm that has just penetrated an egg that says "I'm spermtastic". I can discuss this with my fourth grader, but I am not comfortable sharing this with other people's children. If I use it, I will have to skip over this section. What the book does not include, and should if they are going to have a section on embryology and fetal development, is any information on cell replication (i.e. meiosis and mitosis). I was also disappointed that the only organelle it mentioned was the nucleus. To me this book is very incomplete and includes some extra stuff that really doesn't need to be in there or that should be done more tastefully. This book was obviously not what I was looking for and it really disappointed me.

I would like to see a book that defines a cell, explores what is inside the cell (organelles), talks about cellular replication, and discusses the specialized function of different cells and how they have adapted to these roles. Bundle this into a kid friendly book and I will buy it!

I got this book for my 5-year old. It's a little advanced for her, but she loves it and it getting an intro into some biology concepts, including cell structure and fetal development. Also, it gives her an introduction to some biology words like DNA, protein, cytoplasm, and cell membrane. Includes four pages with diagrams of different types of cells (skin, hair, pigment, gland, muscle, nerve, bone, blood, etc). I also like how the author explains how cells are the same in people and animals, different in plants. Illustrations are very colorful and eyecatching.

Does an excellent job of detailing specialized cells. This text goes through the entire process of sperm combining with egg producing a zygote and the development of an embryo. I read this book to my three year-old daughter, and she was amazed at the development--she even noticed that the 'baby' did not have ears! The images are very colorful that keep their attention.

This text also compares cells of different animals such as plant, dog, and cat. I also noticed that the concepts taught in this book correlate to the AAAS Atlas for appropriate concept development (they say age range up to 9). This is appropriate for my children to bridge the gap between elementary school and high school ( I teach high school biology).

As a practicing molecular biologist, I loved this book. It generated a lot of enthusiasm in my daughter for biology. We bought the whole series and would highly recommend it for young kids.
