About the Author

Wes Burgess, M.D., Ph.D. is the recipient of the Purdue University Literary Award and the Mead Johnson Award for Excellence in Writing. Dr. Burgess has taught on the faculty of UCLA, Stanford University, and the University of California Davis Department of Psychology. He has made numerous appearances on National Public Radio, in television, and films; and he has lectured throughout the world, speaking on health and meditation. Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Sometimes when I read an English translation of Chinese philosophy I feel like there is a residual "Asian Wisdom" that colors and distorts the meaning -- a sort of "Confucius Say..." kind of cultural barrier. Not here. This version of the Tao Te Ching is clearly written, easy to understand, and describes the "enlightenment experience" without that "ancient Chinese secret" tone. It's a great book to read on you own; it's even better to read with someone.

This is a novel translation of the Tao Te Ching, adapted for the author's purpose of using meditation as a way to enlightenment. Viewed in this context, it is very useful book. It is NOT remotely a guide to the Tao Te Ching. For an accessible English translation, try Mitchell or Walker.

Wes Burgess, M.D., Ph.D. trained at Stanford University and completed fellowships at Stanford University and UCLA Medical Schools. He has taught in the undergraduate and doctoral programs on the faculties of Stanford Medical School, UCLA Medical School, the University of California, Davis, Department of Psychology, and others.
