Book Description

June 1, 2006
The Enlightened Savage is a remarkable book that combines anthropology, business, psychology, religion and common sense. This blend of disciplines helps readers learn to trust their instincts or better yet, use their instincts to best advantage. In the world of business, instincts have taken a back seat to logic, which is a shame because instincts are almost always more trustworthy than logic. When President George W. Bush was appointing his cabinet he invited one man, a Democrat, to join his Republican administration. This man, Former Secretary of Defense William Cohen, wasn't sure whether or not to accept the invitation. So he turned for counsel to his five-year old son, asking, "What's more important, your heart or your mind?" His son immediately answered, "Your heart." Cohen then asked, "Why do you say that?" His son without hesitation explained, "Because your heart is never wrong." Author Anthony Hernandez makes the same case in this extraordinary book. He shows us exactly why we ought to trust our hearts, our instincts, and our primal parts. You may have never thought of yourself as a diseased monkey, but you will understand why Hernandez might view you in this way. With that understanding come other understandings gained by The Enlightened Savage, insights that many readers will find to be crucial in their quest for a happy, balanced and successful life.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Logical Path to Self-Empowerment, June 13, 2006
By
Nat (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
Honestly, in the beginning I was just going to read the book because I told a friend I would. Usually, self-help books make me laugh and I don't finish them because they are so sappy or pie in the sky. But, the logic in this one got my attention. I decided to try the exercises just to prove them wrong. But I was the one who had to admit I was wrong in this case. The book makes sense, and IT WORKS!

4.0 out of 5 stars "Enlightening", May 23, 2006
The Enlightened Savage unravels the fabric of our belief systems from an evolutionary framework, encouraging us to think about why we do what we do and how we can turn what we do into effective results. This "enlightening" book explores our prehistoric innateness and relates it to a modern day computing processor. You may get the sense that the human thinking brain is in constant conflict with the instinctive brain, our core programming. Yet our brain "accepts negative programming as survival instructions." Anthony perceives that we are here for a reason, that we have a purpose, and that our struggles likely stem from not knowing or accepting our life's mission, our dharma. Become personally empowered through built-in exercises and self-assessing questions. This book's short, snappy segments cut to the chase, and leave plenty of places where the traveler can stop off and pick the book up at the next station. Be prepared to do some heavy pondering. Anthony provides some strong, thought provoking observations like, "If one of the single biggest genetic differences between humans and monkeys is indeed the gene that's mutated in humans--then human evolution began with a genetic disorder. In other words, we humans may arguably be diseased monkeys." [sharonbender.com]
