Alton Gansky is the master of on-the-edge, what-if fiction, and this is his best work yet. This review is from: Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him (Paperback)
Alton Gansky is the master of on-the-edge, what-if fiction, and this is his best work yet. It features a character based on the Biblical Enoch, the man who didn't die, now returned to earth to deliver a message, a message that gives pause to all who hear it. There's plenty of action, a number of heart-tugging moments, building suspense, and a denouement that kept me reading long after my bedtime. It's rare that I say of a book, "I couldn't put it down," but this is one of those times.

The book is doesn't hit the reader over the head with the message of Christianity. It simply makes him think. And, after all, isn't that what books should really do?

4.0 out of 5 stars Who is this stranger in a strange place..., November 24, 2008
This review is from: Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him (Paperback)
I have always been fascinated by the story of Enoch - the man who walked with God and never died... I was excited to read this book. I had never read a book by Alton Gansky but had heard good things so I wondered what he would do with this character. Overall I thought this was a really good book. Characters were well developed even when some of them were on the scene for a short time. Scenes were set apart and then woven together from different perspectives. There is the mystery of who this stranger is and what he is doing here... miracles are happening - why? Without giving anything away, I just want to say that there were only a couple things that bothered me. One, the cover tag line says,

"He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him..."

I just don't think this statement represented the book very well. And secondly, I just thought it wrapped up a little too quickly. But overall, I really enjoyed this book and will be looking for more books by this author.

This was my first experience reading Gansky. After reading some of the reviews from this book and his other books, I decided to buy it and was excited to get started. It was not but a few chapters into the book that I started to become bored with it. I felt the plot was unrealistic and very thin in detail. People are seeing messages in different forms of media, film, newspaper, radio, etc. and all they have on the case is one FBI agent and an FCC investigator???? Maybe I am over analyzing here but it just wasn't credible to me. If this were to occur today, especially post 9/11, I know there would be mass hysteria and a boat load of investigators working on the phenomenon, not just two. I know it was a key portion of the book, but I hated the whole false church and "Mary-Martha" portion of the plot. I just didn't like it and was plain bored to death. Unfortunately, I forced myself to finish the book hoping for some hidden redemption. It never came!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enoch by Alton Gansky, November 2, 2008
This review is from: Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him (Paperback)
This book captures your full attention on page one and carries you through a fast-paced journey through a story of good versus evil.

An unusual message, "Look for the one I AM sending you," stops popping up on TV shows, Movies, Computers, Radio Stations & Newspappers. The message puts fear and confusion in the minds of many. Before you know it, you are pulled into the mystery and trying to figure out the ending.

I highly recommend this book. An easy read with a great message. Conversations with a Stranger

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Build up...Abrupt ending, August 18, 2010
This review is from: Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him (Paperback)
This is the second novel I have read by this author. He is very good and for the most part I have to say I enjoyed this book a great deal. It certainly kept my attention as more and more people received the strange message. The author was great at revealing small bits of information at a time to keep the reader interested without spilling the beans all at once. There was also the question as to whether the "bad" characters would repent of their evil.

On the other hand the build up was so good and so riveting that the ending was too abrupt and dissatisfying. What happened to Mary-Martha? I assume she died but there wasn't any confirmation. What happened to the bodyguards who were weeping and helpless when confronted with their sin? What was the final message that went out all over the world? Too many questions left unanswered.

Of course the author left the ending with the clear indication that there is a sequel in the works so maybe some of my questions will be answered.

3.0 out of 5 stars Started off well, but flamed out at the end..., October 13, 2009
This review is from: Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him (Paperback)
I thought the concept idea was really interesting. Alton continues to struggle writing believable dialog and nuanced characters, but the story kept me hooked. And it was an enjoyable read. Until the end. The story that had taken 300 pages to tell wrapped up in about 2 with a couple of gun shots. I literally said to myself, "that was it????" A major disappointment for the ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down, June 11, 2009

This review is from: Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him (Paperback)
This is no casual read. Get ready to squirm in your chair and lock yourself in the bathroom to avoid distractions because you won't want to put it down!

The first of the book takes you to visit various people who are going about their daily lives, but then the "message" they see/hear sends them on a quest to find out what is going on. Sometimes changing scenes like that can be tricky but I never felt lost and it wasn't too hard to keep up.

Henick (Enoch) finds himself in west Texas and has been sent as a messenger from God. He has a message for the whole world, but along the way he is sent to help certain individuals for reasons only he understands (actually, even he doesn't understand all of them). The first guy he helps, Eddie, goes after Henick to find out more about him, but then finds himself in mind-bending situations as he helps Henick along his journey.

Mary-Martha Celestine pastors a mega "church" (if you can call it that) called Church of New Revelation, but the "revelations" are all made up from her corrupt mind. She claims to talk to spirits and soon finds out what a dangerous game she is playing when she hears about this "message" going around.

This book is full of action and suspense. Henick continues to get himself into situations he may not get out of and has the FCC, the FBI, and Mary-Martha's goons trying to find him. It's a matter of who is going to find him first...and what will they do to him when they do! I won't be getting rid of this book and would love to read more from Gansky. Very intriguing!

Enoch shows how God can be working on the bigger picture, but still care about and be very involved in individual lives. It also reminds us that we don't have to know why God wants us to do something, but to trust him and do it anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling suspense story about spiritual warfare and a message from I AM, November 24, 2008
This review is from: Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him (Paperback)
Enoch by Alton Gansky was my first experience with this talented writer, and it certainly won't be my last! A strange man shows up in rural Texas without identification or a history, and soon begins touching every life he comes into contact with, including Eddie Feely, an angry young man who's quick with his fists and quicker to get drunk. Contact with this man changes Eddie irrevokably, and he feels compelled to track down the stranger to find out why. The two end up racing across Texas to an unknown destination pursued by the hired goons of a mysterious female religious leader. While the chase goes on, mysterious messages are popping up in all forms of media across the country: movies, television, radio, and newpapers, all pointing to a Messenger. Gansky's story of suspense, faith, and spiritual warfare is intense and impossible to put down. I was up until after midnight last night reading it, and picked it up as soon as my eyes were open this morning! The characters are compelling, but what really moves the plot is how Gansky drops just enough hints to keep you flipping pages without giving away too much or too little. He also shares a powerful message about the dangers of flirting with spirits through mediums as well as listening closely to the message of spiritual leaders and comparing it closely with the Bible to seek the Truth about each message. Gansky has introduced an intriguing list of characters involved with law enforcement in this book, and I hope that they will pop up elsewhere, as they are too interesting to let go with just this one book. I don't want to give away any spoilers for future readers, but I certainly hope they can figure out who Henick is before I did (page 277, and yes, I did smack myself up alongside my head)! Gansky knocks this thriller out of the park!

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting Story, November 24, 2008
This review is from: Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him (Paperback)
This book is the ultimate good and evil story.

The messenger has come to let the world know that time grows short, look for the one I sent you, he walks among you. This strange message is delivered to people throughout the world. On the radio, on television and in the newspaper. Healings occur and are witnessed on television. The authorities believe at first that this is an elaborate prank until they figure out that the way these messages are being delievered is truly impossible.

This tale is a face paced modern day miracle story of a messenger that comes to earth to deliver a message from God. It was obvious from the beginning that this person was a messenger of God and that he was here to do the will of God by delivering his message.

As it was in days of old it still is true today and that is that even when someone is witness to a miracle, right before their very eyes, they don't want to believe it. Some say seeing is believing and even when they see it they still don't believe it. The bottom line is that there will be believers and non believers. Some don't want to believe because they don't have a good heart or good thoughts for others. Others will believe there is a God simply because they know and have faith.

This book affirms the truth for those who belive that God is real. That He is there for you. And hopefully for those who don't believe or aren't sure, you will find hope through this wonderful story that is at times spine tingling and always page turning and is good through to the very last page and beyond because it leaves you with a good feeling of hope.
