Let's start off by saying that this is a great album. There was a lot of ballyhoo when it was released about Billy returning to his roots and was back on track. Although it's a great album it's not as good as Signs of Life (the album that preceded it). It has a lot of energy but lacks a little of the creativity of Signs and Creatures of Habit. Do I recommend getting it? Of course!! If your a Billy fan you should own all of his stuff anyway, including the Piper cd's.

I feel that this is one of his best works. All we Have to Give has some soaring keyboard work that balances perfectly with his very human vocals. The song is basically telling a friend that he may not be famous or successful forever but he will always care about the friend. At least thats how I interpret it. This sentiment would probably be echoed by a lot of people today who are in jobs where either they or a close friend are fired, and just trying to go on without that person can be hell. Another great song is Till its Over, which is like all we have to give but is darker in tone. It has kind of a medieval flare to it. I think it could have spurred a great music video if capital had been willing to spend the money. You can imagine lords and ladies on elegant horses and he is riding by with this lute in his hands, basically saying there is a higher truth than money, and it is irrespective of who is in power. My third favorite song from the album is Lady with a Tenor Sax, which kind of sounds like it was written for a movie. Once again, a bit dark and ironic, but the melody takes an unusual turn, and I would say it represents rather bold songwriting that may not have been common in its time, but is virtually nonexistant today. The one problem with the album is its rather depressing cover. A cover needs to be confident and bold, since merchandising is one of the prime ways to attract customers. Its too bad he couldn't have used the photo from Creatures of Habit, i.e., all black outfit with black background and part of a guitar in the foreground. This cd could have been a critical release in his career if it had been handled the right way. It could have been a turning point for him after the failed music video on his previous release.Read more ›

Enough Is Enough/Hear & Now/Creatures of Habit

I remember stumbling across the cassette of this album in a $1.99 bin at a store in Virginia, back around 1989, well after its release. This would imply that I had not heard anything from it on the radio prior to that, which would be correct. This was the era of Milli Vanilli and Taylor Dayne and so on, and Billy hadn't gotten any notice on radio since "Rock Me Tonite" sank like a stone after his "why all the pink silk?" video back in '84...

So Billy was making an album for an audience that had mostly already abandoned him, and his attitude could best be described as defiant (a stance he perfected on the next album, "Hear And Now"), and I find it charming and earnest. This is the sound of a man making the best songs he can, knowing it would be a miracle if they found an audience. Well, they didn't really find an audience, the album came and went and the only single shot all the way up to 61.

The opening track immediately made me wonder why. "Shot O' Love" is a blast, and I mean that literally as well as figuratively. Horns (most likely keyboard based) blast throughout the song, but one thing that remains consistent about Billy's production is that he makes each song unique without relying on beating your brains in (think Eddie Money for example). The horns are there, they do blast, but they don't overtake the driving rhythm nor Billy's exquisite tenor.

The single, Love Is The Hero", is weak by comparison but it does sport a nice counterpoint beat, inspiring a vocal technique he is not known for and which he pulls off quite well.
