Editorial Reviews

Tom Waits, Marilyn Manson, Traffic, Judy Garland, Dusty Springfield and more host a musical commentary on one of the largest business crises of recent times: the fall of energy giant Enron. Based on the best-selling book by Fortune Magazine reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, director Alex Gibney’s critically-acclaimed documentary ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM tracks the series of events leading to Enron’s downward spiral. This eclectic collection of songs about greed, illusion, temptation and ambition underscores the actions of Enron execs who scammed billions of dollars out of employees and investors in one of the worst business scandals of our time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Missing more than 1 song..., February 12, 2006
By
Artisan7 "artisan7" (Brooklyn, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room (Audio CD)
Think the cd is excellent but it is actually missing several songs. If you are interested in any of the missing songs, you will have to find them on your own. To help you find any of your favorites, I have listed the missing songs below as described under the movie's DVD music credits.

Missing songs include:

* What's he building?, Written and performed by Tom Waits, Jalma music (this is just the intro)
* Straight to the top (vegas), Written by Tom Waits and Gregory Cohen, performed by Tom Waits, Jalma Music
* Knee 1, written and performed by Philip Glass, Outrageous Music Publishers
* California, - written by Alexander Greenwald et al..., Flying Saucer Fuel Music, performed by Phantom Planet (this was one of my personal favorites)
* Magic by Sting and Joyce Silveira P. de Jesus, performed by the Black Eye Peas, a&m records
* Love for Sale, written by Cole Porter, performed by Julie London
* Temptation, written and performed by Tom Waits, Jalma music
* Californication, written by John Fruciante, performed by the Red Hot Chillie Peppers

Enjoy the cd and, by all means, if you have not yet seen the DVD, please do - it does a fantastic in-depth job of putting this modern tale of astronomical deceit, untold power and unbridled greed together in an easily digestable format (based on the book of the same title).

You may never look at your CEO the same way again.

4.0 out of 5 stars without Glass, half empty, February 2, 2006
By
leepaola (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room (Audio CD)
Just like with magical food/wine pairings, the song choices for this documentary were pitch perfect. There is, however, a blatant omission on the album: the hypnotically dark & alluring "Knee 1" from Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach opera. It probably doesn't jive well with the other songs on the soundtrack, but for me, this piece captures the ineffable soullessness of the Enron sham better than any of the other tracks. 4 out of 5 because the star song from the movie is shamefully m.i.a.

5.0 out of 5 stars Irony taken to a new level - The Enron Soundtrack, September 25, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room (Audio CD)
The Smartest Guys in the Room sountrack is amazing in its ability to provide deeper meaning to the documentary. The Dusty Springfield song "Son of a Preacher Man" with its reference to Ken Lay is my personal favorite. "The Ship is Sinking" written for this film by Matt Hauser is a nice touch and the real winner is Tom Waites with his rendidtion of "God's Away on Business".

Even if you don't know the details of the Enron debaucle, this CD should be part of your collection.
