5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Connect Four Style Game! September 10, 2013
Verified Purchase
******************************** EDIT 03102014 ********************************
I got this game when it had zero permissions. Not sure when the permissions were added, as I've deleted the game since writing the review. I don't know why there are so many suspicious-looking permissions also, and I don't wish to reinstall it with the billing permission on it. If anyone could let me know what the permissions are for so I can further update this review, that'd be great.

If any of you have ever played Connect 4, then this game will be awfully familiar. It doesn't come with any tutorial, but as the name might suggest, it's an extremely simple concept: You just have to get 4 of your tokens lined up in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Of course, you have to be the first one to get 4 in a row, and that's where the challenge kicks in!

This particular game has some great things going for it:

- Four different A.I. levels to play against. The four buttons on the left side of the menu screen represent the difficulty levels. The top one is the easiest, while the bottom is the highest difficulty.

- Multiplayer. You can choose to play with friends instead of the computer, which I really like. The game can be played with 2-4 people, and the playing area becomes larger to accommodate the extra players' tokens.

On top of that, there are no permissions whatsoever for this app! It's been a while since I've seen that in an FAOTD, and it's great to see!

So, with all that in mind, plus the fact that it has a pretty good user interface and exits cleanly, this is a solid 5 star game in my book. Highly recommended.

- Sam

4.0 out of 5 stars Good FAotD, challenging game September 10, 2013

To play this game, you drop tokens into the game board, filling it from the bottom to the top. The first player to get four tokens in a row in any direction (including diagonally) is the winner.

I dock the game a star because during one game it locked up on my Kindle Fire HD 8.9. It did eventually allow the Home pop-up menu to show, but even that was unavailable for about 30 seconds. I was just about to restart the tablet when the Home pop-up finally worked.

Also, it would be nice if the game kept some stats of wins vs. the AI.

You can play against the AI, or with two, three, or four players. When playing with multiple players you are just taking turns on the same device ... it does not network to play the same game on two devices.

Against the AI, you always move first. When you win, the first move alternates to the AI, and he gives you the first move on the next game when he wins.

It's not clear which of the four AI settings on the left side of your start-up options are which. Through experimentation I found that the top selection must be the easiest. I could beat that one. The bottom selection cleaned my clock every game.

The game is worth a download at least for the multiple player options. Especially if you have kids, it will be a nice game to play with them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Insane permissions April 8, 2014

I got this game a whole ago when it was a faod, and at that point it was pretty good. However now they require absolutely insane permissions. Considering that the game worked just fine without them, the only reason they could possible need them now is to cash in on stealing information from customers.

1.0 out of 5 stars ZERO stars for new permissions! March 13, 2014

Recently I was prompted to update the game with new permissions, which I feel invade my privacy. When I first installed the game, it had no sneaky permissions at all, so I'm pretty suspicious about adding all these permissions later. After all, this is NOT the free version of the game!

Thank you, but no thank you! I uninstalled :-(

3.0 out of 5 stars Average June 26, 2015

A simple game like Connect Four that you play against your friends or family is OK as a time killer in the real world. It has been around for so long, and there are only so much possible moves, that you would likely want to move on to another game after just a few rounds.

Converting it into an electronic game means you don't need the physical board (pass your device around to take turns to play), and you don't even need a physical opponent because there's always the A.I. (Artificial Intelligence). But it could still get a bit boring after a few games. EnsenaSoft, instead of designing some new twist to the game to extend your interest, opted to prettify it. So, you get soothing music, an animated background, and various animations during gameplay. The irony, however, is that the board itself become quite small (doesn't fill up the screen & occupy less than half the width!), and some of the animations are distracting with no way to turn them off. I guess they never thought of providing a variable size board which is a pity.

The version I'm reviewing is v1.1, and it has some questionable permissions like getting your accounts' info, read phone state, and get a list of running tasks. The first two could be related to Playphone which bills itself as a social gaming network but in truth just another game marketer & big data collector, but the latter is completely unnecessary. To be fair, this game didn't access the Internet during my testing & ran fine offline, but there is no guarantee that it will never do it. Why would you want a third-party network like Playphone when most if not all users already have access to Google Play or Amazon GameCircle or both? I definitely would like to see it removed together with those permissions. As a saving grace, at least this game exits cleanly.

This is an average game, with some unwanted permissions & component, and overpriced at $1.99.
