A true to life story showing both the enslavement of blacks and women in the pre Civil War era. Costuming is exellent!

Until seeing this movie I had never heard of Fanny Kemble. After initially watching this movie in 2006 I went to the Library and checked out a book about Fanny Kembles' life and family. The book went into details about Butler Island in Georgia. She sacrificed a lot to help slaves escape to the north. She also taught slaves to read and write. Her husband was cruel and slaves were treated like animals. The scene in the Infirmary made me sick. Before marrying Fanny Captain Butler told her his slaves were happy and treated well.On the first day seeing slaves living quarters Fanny had enough of slavery!

I love history in general, but especially the history of our area. The Butler Plantation is just outside Darien about 20 miles north of us. We live on St. Simons Island. This area was notorious for it's slavery and slave trade! The slave ship "The Wanderer" hails from here as well. This movie really captured the true horrific life of the slaves. Jane Seymour and Carradine were outstanding in the roles of Fannie Kemble and Butler! Fannie Kemble was a true heroine!
