An explanation of the Azef affair., February 28, 2010
This review is from: Entangled in Terror: The Azef Affair and the Russian Revolution (Hardcover)
I have read a previous book about the terrorist/police spy Azef. The author-a Harvard PhD shows how Azef was probably just a police spy rather than a commited SR who wanted to terrorize the Tzarist state. Azef wanted the good life of no work and luxeries, and therefore siphoned money out of the SR bank coffers, along with taking his police spy salery. He was not a commited socialist.
His betrayal came because of a kidnapping of a police officer's daughter. Information was gathered from him to implicate Azef. The SRs bungled their interogation of Azef and let him escape. The Germans threw him in prison in WWI, and he got sick. When released, he died of his poor health.
Greifman makes a compelling story for why her characterization of Azef is correct. I tend to believe her. Azef was not a complicated man in the sense of what he wanted. He wanted the good life. He did not care for politics or even his family.
He was a sinister figure in the polical movement. I think the author shed some light on his character. This is an OK read on an interesting affair in the twilight of the Russian monarchy.
