Book Description

2000
In her modern Barsetshire chronicles, the author returns to her familiar haunts to concoct another lively tale of village society and family life, spiced with the yearnings and hesitations of a characteristically cross-purposed cast of lovers. Thirkell begins by addressing her reader with a nod to the predictable pleasures her novels promise.
The story of Enter Sir Robert unfolds, however, in two of the less-frequented of her Barsetshire communities, Hatch End, a small village in the valley of the Rising River, and Little Misfit, three of four miles away. Each village is home to one of the two families--the Hallidays and the Grahams--whose unmarried children provide the romantic interest that sets the plot spinning.First published more than four decades ago and long unavailable to American readers, Enter Sir Robert joins the many volumes previously issued in Moyer Bell's continuing series of continuing series of Angela Thirkell publications.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

In her modern Barsetshire chronicles, the author returns to her familiar haunts to concoct another lively tale of village society and family life, spiced with the yearnings and hesitations of a characteristically cross-purposed cast of lovers. Thirkell begins by addressing her reader ("the one who says our books are so nice because it doesn't matter which you read or where you open it as they are all exactly the same--as indeed they are, with a difference") with a nod to the predictable pleasures her novels promise. The story of Enter Sir Robert unfolds, however, in two of the less-frequented of her Barsetshire communities, Hatch End, a small village in the valley of the Rising River, and Little Misfit, three of four miles away. Each village is home to one of the two families--the Hallidays and the Grahams--whose unmarried children provide the romantic interest that sets the plot spinning.

First published more than four decades ago and long unavailable to American readers, Enter Sir Robert joins the many volumes previously issued in Moyer Bell's continuing series of Angela Thirkell publications.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enter Sir Robert, May 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Enter Sir Robert (Paperback)
The mysterious Sir Robert finally appears in this Barcetshire novel by Angela Thirkell. Although not as good as some of Thirkell's earlier novels, it carries on the story and ties up some loose ends. Sir Robert's daughter, Edith, plays a big part in the book and adds life to a slow moving plot, however Thirkell fans will enjoy the book none the less.
