This application makes applying for copyrights as painless as possible (the process will still be painful regardless, but at least you'll be avoiding a large portion of it).

First, a correction. Despite the product page claiming that this software is made by Enteractive, it's really made by Official Software, LLC. Second, a caveat - this product allows you to do a lot of the groundwork yourself, but does not replace professional advice of an attorney (I am NOT an attorney, but certainly know better than to wade into shark infested waters without the benefit of legal advice).

What the program does: It shields you from the legal mumbo jumbo and leads you through an interactive process of applying for a copyright. It does this using an interviewing process and assists with the completion of the following forms: PA, PA/S, TX, TX/S, VA, VA/S and Form SR, all of which are important and all of which can be completed interactively on your system. You also get Form CA for Corrections & Amplifications, and Form CON Continuation Sheet in the package.

It also gives key information from Copyright Office ciculars to assist you when filling in the form fields, and this is why your finished forms should be checked by an attorney before submission. The value of this program is that you can save many hours of expensive attorney time by doing the up-front work, which will minimize the legal costs of preparing and submitting a copyright application. As an added bonus this program also provides advice about how to use the copyright. The publisher also has specific online forms that can be used with this package that cover everything from music to architecture.

This program also covers copyrights for online works & websites, so if your copyright is in connection with e-commerce or Internet material I strongly recommend that you read CyberRegs: A Business Guide to Web Property, Privacy, and Patents by Bill Zoellick before you use the program itself. Also, if you're also interested in trademarks, you will save money by purchasing the Official Intellectual Property Suite, which bundles this program with the companion program called Official Trademark Software 1.0.

Here is what the software support team told me when I tried to use this software on a Windows XP laptop (apparently you have to have a "tiny" amount of virtual memory for use with computers that have more than 256MB RAM--which is ridiculous):

Official Copyright(tm) software has a compatability problem with Windows 2000/XP computers that have more than 256MB RAM. If this is the case the application will not run complaining that there is not enough memory. This problem does not affect Official Trademark(tm) or any other software created by Official Software. To get the software to work you can do the following as a workaround. This problem will be addressed with the next version of the software.

1. From the START menu select CONTROL PANELS
2. Select PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE
3. Select SYSTEM
4. Click on the ADVANCED tab
5. In the PERFORMANCE section click on the SETTINGS button
6. Click on the ADVANCED tab
7. In the VIRTUAL MEMORY section click on the CHANGE button
8. Select the CUSTOM SIZE radio button, then enter the following:
Initial size (MB): 2
Initial size (MB): 2
9. Click on the SET button

10. Click OK on all the windows and you're done. (Note: You may need to restart your computer.)

Official Copyright is a fantastic tool that makes filing complex copyright forms a no-brainer! I can't believe how easy this software has made it to protect my songs and scripts from infringement. I just told a friend of mine who is a photographer, and he thinks it is a great product also. Great stuff, Official!
