Book Description

September 15, 2000
More than 100 celebrity and athlete moms share their problems and advice for coping with the demands of work, personal health and fitness and a family. When Bobsledder Alex Powe-Allred was writing The Quiet Storm: A Celebration of Women in Sports (Masters Press, 1998), she found that one subject kept more women talking than any others: their children. Who watched her children when she trained? How did she get back in shape after having a baby? How much did she train when she was pregnant? And what about Valerie Still, did she train when she was pregant? Is it true that one of the U.S. Women Soccer team members brought her baby on the road with the team when they were training for the 1996 Olympics? And then Powe-Allred realized that if these women wanted to know how everybody else coped, well... so would the rest of us. As Valerie Still herself said, "There ought to be a club for female athletes who are mothers."

That's what this book is, the locker room banter of a club for mothers. "Here's what happened to me and how I coped with it." Topics covered include training, breastfeeding, scheduling, diet, coping... all the things you always wondered if anyone else did or didn't do. You are no longer alone; this book is your exclusive guest pass to The Mother Zone.

From the Author

While working on another women's sports book (The Quiet Storm), one of the most difficult chapters was the one about mother athletes. Each woman interviewed had so much to say, so many great experiences, but interestingly, so many questions. It was clear that even the top athletes were uncertain about what was too much or how to do things in terms of fitness routines and their pregnancies or post-work. Entering the Mother Zone was written to meet the needs of today's woman. I am just so thankful to all the women, trainers and physicians who participated. They made this book better than I could have dreamed.

I am not a famous person or an athlete but I am a mom and I have to say I really enjoyed this book. The stories from other mothers were catchy and full of information. It gives me ideas of how to juggle a busy lifestyle and being a mom. It made me feel like I am not alone in my struggles and made me laugh at the same time. I would recommend this book to anyone who is already a mother, pregnant, or thinking about having children. It gives many tips on how to stay healthy throughout pregnancy and afterwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read..., January 17, 2001
This review is from: Entering the Mother Zone: Balancing Self, Health & Family (Paperback)
I received a copy of this book for Christmas and I have to say I couldn't put it down. I actually stayed up until 2 am reading it cover to cover (even though I am still a bit exhausted with nursing my son several times a night). It was worth it. I felt inspired to start getting in shape again and also to eat healthier meals. The stories are fun and entertaining while, at the same time, empower women to be the best moms they can be.
