About the Author

Kouros Gorgani has worked with the Sybase Canada Inc., since 1995, where he has become a senior specialist with the PowerBuilder product. He quickly became a key resource for technical questions for the PowerBuilder product and is currently a member of its Alliance group, whose goal is to supply a relationship-focused, escalated-level of customer service. Kouros enjoys working with PowerBuilder and lets people know about it. Like a parent with his child, Kouros is tough but fair with the product. Like a savvy veteran, Kouros always stays fit by keeping up with the latest technology and evaluating the competition. He is also a certified PowerBuilder developer, has extensive experience in client/server development, and has worked with DBMSs on mainframes and PC networks for several years.

Kouros is the author of Official Advanced PowerBuilder 6, The Definitive Guide. Kouros is also a contributing writer for the PowerBuilder Developer's Journal and is on the editorial board. A speaker at the Powersoft annual user conference, he often provides technical sessions for various user groups. Kouros continues to be a willing mentor to others and retains a keen interest in educating and keeping people up to speed on product information. Kouros has dedicated himself to the proactive side of the business, contributing well to such things as technical documents, white papers, and technical talks. Writing another book on the subject seems to be a natural evolution for him.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty much a total waste of money, January 12, 2000
By
Scott Warnick (Salt Lake City UT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Enterprise Components and PowerBuilder 7, The Definitive Guide (Paperback)
This tome reads like it was rushed to market to cash in on the (hoped for) popularity of Sybase tools for internet and distributed programming. It has some very basic, very high-level, very general information on internet technology (COM, CORBA, IIOP, etc.). This information is not specific to the Sybase toolset and could be found anywhere. Only about 1/10th of the book has anything to do with building distributed applications with Powerbuilder (or PowerJ) and that material suffers from a crippling lack of real-world examples. If I could give this effort "no stars" I would. My advice is to skip and save your money for the Barlotta book.

I also find it interesting that several negative reviews of this book have been dropped during the last month. Be not deceived. Dropping one set of bad reviews will only result in more bad reviews being posted, because this is a bad book.

I found this book quite helpful to my line of work. I am quit new to powerbuilder and distributed computing. I liked the authors style of writing. It's technical content could be better but what other choices do we have these days?
