Enterprise Java Development on a Budget is an annotated roadmap covering every major aspect of Open Source enterprise Java development "on a budget". This book allows a programmer or programming team to develop complex applications for enterprises using as little money as possible. Open Source has had a profound effect on the Java Community. Many Java Open Source projects have even become de-facto standards. The principal purpose of this book is to guide the reader through the development of a real enterprise Java application(s) using nothing but Open Source Java Tools, Projects and Frameworks. Each chapter will deal with an aspect of the design and development of the application as they relate to a specific tool or framework being used. In areas of the application where there may be implementation choices in terms of which Open Source project to use, we will show one more possible paths and explain why, in the context of the application we chose one project/tool versus competing/similar ones. This book is intended to define the role of Open Source on the Java Community. It will provide information on how, when and why to use Open Source. It will also contain as a useful appendix a catalog of Open Source Projects/Products making an impact. The catalog provides information and examples necessary for managers, developers and architects to make decisions on whether to use or evaluate specific projects.

About the Author

Brian Sam-Bodden has spent over 10 years working with object technologies, with an emphasis on the Java platform. He holds dual bachelor degrees from Ohio Wesleyan University in computer science and physics and is the president and chief software architect for Integrallis Software, where he focuses on object modeling and Java, particularly Java EE. He has worked as an architect, developer, mentor, trainer, and code monkey for several Fortune 500 companies in various industries including taxation, insurance, retail sciences, telecommunications, banking, finance, distribution and scientific data management. As an independent consultant, he has promoted the use of open source in the industry by educating his clients on the cost benefits and productivity gains they can achieve.

He is a frequent speaker at user groups at both national and international conferences. He is a Sun Certified Java Programmer, Developer, and Enterprise Architect. Brian also co-authored the Apress Java title Enterprise Java Development on a Budget: Leveraging Java Open Source Technologies (2004). Aside from spending time with his wife and son, Brian spends most of his time writing code or on the mat practicing Brazilian jiujitsu.

Christopher Judd is president and primary consultant for Judd Solutions, LLC. He is an international speaker, open source evangelist, leader of the Central Ohio Java Users Group, and coauthor of Enterprise Java Development on a Budget (Apress, 2003). He has spent 12 years architecting and developing software for Fortune 500 companies in various industries, including insurance, retail, government, manufacturing, and transportation. His focus is consulting, mentoring, and training with Java, Java EE, Java Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME), mobile technologies, and related technologies.

Given the scope of what the authors are trying to achieve here, I didn't expect them to succeed: it is, after all, just a lot of information.

Fortunately, they've proven me wrong. This book is excellent, technical, well-written, and well-organized. If you're looking for a mechanism go from Programmer to Developer, or from Developer to Lead Developer, then this book will give explain the technical material you need to master.

I must confess that the title is what first intrigued me. I like "process" oriented books, that tell me how to do more with less. But when I cracked it open, I found a very broad collection of quality open source projects, all available for free.

Rather than just listing the products and letting me fend for myself, the authors walk me through what to expect from an MVC or persistence framework, laying out the landscape and telling me what the tradeoffs are for each solution. It's a great idea. With a little promotion, a book with this title, philosophy, and organization *should* go places. I'm not sure why it hasn't so far.

I looked at the size of the book and didn't think it was possible for the authors to adequately cover all java open source technologies listed on the cover. I was mistaken. Since I am a seasoned J2EE professional, I thought I could skip over sections on Ant, Junit and UML. Again, I was mistaken. I learned many tips on topics I thought I was already an expert on.

Not only did the authors provide valuable information on each topic, but each technology was compared in an unbiased fashion. I felt each chapter provided enough background and detailed information for me to decide if it's a good fit for my application. The authors point out critical questions to ponder in each chapter when making architectural decisions. The chapter on "Data Storage Options" is a great example.

I found the theme of using the sample application throughout the book as a cohesive and a good way to demonstrate and contrast the different open source technologies. The sample application represented a real world scenario and demonstrated more than just the simple (and non real world) usage of the technologies.

I only have one wish, I would have liked to seen a little more coverage of Apache Axis in the web services chapter.

It would be impossible to thoroughly cover each open source technology included in the book since each one is a book unto itself. However, after reading this single book I feel educated enough to choose and further evaluate open source technologies that will meet my specific application needs. This sure beats having to research countless web sites, articles and technology specific books to find information provided in this one resource.
