Book Description

June 1, 2003
According to the dictionary, a portal is a door or gateway, and a grandiose one at that. Similarly, a portal in IT and business terminology means a gateway – to business information. It is the means that allows a user to access all relevant business information, in a structured way.

Within just a few years from the sales of the first enterprise portals they have found their way into the mainstream business world and into the minds – and often the offices – of almost every single IT department. Results of research performed by many industry and financial analysts show the rapidly growing importance of corporate portals.

By 2002 it had become clear that almost every single enterprise intends to deploy such a portal within a short period of time, if it had not already done so. Portals were on top of the list, or close to it, whenever spending plans of corporate IT departments were analyzed. Despite a negative overall economic environment, a very harsh climate in the IT industry and geopolitical tensions, within just a handful of years the enterprise portal market grew rapidly to a size of $1 billion by 2003.

As substantial as this development seems, it does not even reflect the full scope of what is happening. These $1 billion dollars are purely covering the estimated spending on licenses and maintenance. However, those cost components only account for no more than about 20% of all portal-related expenditures. In other words, by the year 2003 a new high-growth IT market had been created with a total volume of at least $5 billion dollars!

Editorial Reviews

Review

There simply is no better introduction to Enterprise Portals available today. Very well researched and a good overview. -- Bill Morales, Principal Nelson Consulting

This book is a MUST-READ for every IT Professional looking for an overview of the hottest enterprise market today. -- Darren Shields, President, Workflow Mobility

From the Publisher

As technology keeps developing at lightning speed, it is difficult to keep up with everything that is going on. Business people and IT professionals rarely find the time to get ‘down and dirty’ and collect all the background information they need for their job?

This is where Enterprise Portals for the Business and IT Professional comes in – it has done this task. The book gives a quick overview of enterprise portals, where they come from, what their most important features are, how to gain value out of them, and what applications will provide a quick win and ROI. It also comes with checklists for evaluating portal solutions, performing ROI calculations, identifying vendors in the portal space and sources of more detailed information about subjects relevant to portals.

In other words, Enterprise Portals for the Business and IT Professional gives a concise summary of the most important aspects surrounding enterprise portals. In doing so, it breaks down the technical complexities to easy-to-understand concepts, cuts through the marketing talk and focuses on practical approaches for how to use portal technologies to maximize business value.

Was recommended to read this book at a convention. My first thought was "Oh no, not another book on enterprise portals!". I was really taken by surprise how much useful info had been packed inside. Above all the easy-to-understand language and practical information deserve the five stars. Congratulations, Mr Kastel.

It is 2007 folks...just remember before you buy...this book was written almost five years ago. In this fast-paced market, it might as well have been never written at all - especially if you are trying to evaluate portal frameworks - forget it...just too old. May be useful (to some) for thumbing through for historical perspectives and some general knowledge (terminology etc). In any case, not a technical book at all.
