4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Outrageous and Contagious Style from Mr. Lif., June 6, 2001
By
Chris G (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Enters the Colossus (Audio CD)
Massachusetss MC Mr. Lif tears through 7 innovative tracks fortified by various underground dwellers such as Fakts One, paWI, EL-P of Company Flow and Spilled Acid Productions(check the stellar "Pulse Cannon"). He also teams up with several independent mic-rippers such as Akrobatik, Insight, and T-Ruckus to create an overall pleasing EP. Lif's unique, raspy vocals filter through the mic ever-so-perfectly, his apocalyptic B-Boy stance makes a true underground enthusiast drool on his/her backpack. Big up. Highly recommended. Peace.

4.0 out of 5 stars Boston's Finest {4 Stars}, February 28, 2007
This review is from: Enters the Colossus (Audio CD)
You'll never find another emcee that sounds like Mr. Lif. He's not the most visible guy on the rap scene, so chances are that if you are looking for this then you already know who he is and what he's about. With that being said, the production from EL-P, Fakts One, paWL, and Lif himself is dope. I like to describe it as electronic boom bap (you know -- whirrs, clicks, beeps, etc). As far as lyrics go, I've never heard Lif on a beat where he couldn't catch wreck.

As far as flaws, it's an EP, so there really aren't many. I tend to skip the title track because it's a song that I have to be in the mood for, but the scratches and cuts on that joint are ill, so it's still listenable. I do find "Front On This" (produced by paWL) kind of boring and I would label it as skip material.

Mr. Lif Enters The Colossus is Lif's debut EP, so I can't say that this is his best release because he would grow and go on to drop better material (I Phantom and Emergency Rations, for example). At any rate, you probably know already that Lif. doesn't make bad albums. So any Lif album is a good starting point if you're just getting into his music. I recommend adding this EP to your collection.

Standout Tracks: Cro-Magnon feat. Illin' P (My Favorite), Avengers feat. Akrobatik, Pulse Cannon feat. Insight & T-Ruckus, Arise, Datablend

5.0 out of 5 stars True School Hip Hop, January 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Enters the Colossus (Audio CD)
Mr.Lif is a true mc. He is very lyrical, and has the ability to battle in freestyle. It is good to hear hip hop like this, because it reminds me that there is intelligent hip hop out there. On top of mr.lif's skills, he remains a down to earth chill cat, always kicking it with his fans. peace and respect.

5.0 out of 5 stars ATrue Rapper, May 28, 2002

Mr. Lif (A fine and fellow bostonian) shows hip hoppers can rhyme and spit knowledge without rappin' about cars or money. Lif accompied by other tight rappers shows true rhyming abilities. Dont let the few number of tracks turn you away from it, it's an album you can bounce to all the way through (hidden tracks pay mad hommage to bean town) big ups to lif and anyone who picks up this hot album.

5.0 out of 5 stars True lyrics for a hard world, December 10, 2011
This review is from: Enters the Colossus (Audio CD)
This is one of the best Mr. Lif albums I have ever heard. Sure it is a little short but each and every song draws you closer to the truth, taking people out of the false reality and makes you enter the colossus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Hip Hop, June 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Enters the Colossus (Audio CD)
Honestly, Mr Lif has to be one of the greatest MCs on the scene right now. His delivery and the images he creates are sick. I read an interview he did last year...and the guy is super intelligent. Such a shame that kids think that P.Diddy, Nelly and Jadakiss are real hip hop. Lif could squash those cats...easy. Every track on this EP is a banger, as is everything Def Jux/Ozone releases.

4.0 out of 5 stars My introduction to Lif.....shook me, May 16, 2002
This review is from: Enters the Colossus (Audio CD)
I slept on boston hip hop for real...but Lif singlehandedly readjusted my perceptions of the scene there.......This album is a classic...just too short....so buy the Live at the Middle East album for a follow up and then just wait patiently for Liffy's next jawn just like i am.

Peace

Mr. Lif Enters the Colossus is as tight as an EP can get. 7 head banger tracks that give you knowledge to your mind. The Production is on point. Mr. lif and guest underground kats keep it real and I love it. Every track is banging. My favorite is Arise. Mr. Lif and company flow is the most underated group in the game. Now waiting for Company Flow's new album. If you are a true hip hop head pick this EP up.
