More About the Author

Katherine Applegate's many books include the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter book series, the picture book The Buffalo Storm, and the award-winning novel Home of the Brave. With her husband, Michael Grant, she wrote the hugely popular series Animorphs, which has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.

Katherine was inspired to write The One and Only Ivan after reading about the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, the Shopping Mall Gorilla. The real Ivan lived alone in a tiny cage for twenty-seven years at a shopping mall before being moved to Zoo Atlanta after a public outcry. He is now a beloved celebrity at the zoo, which houses the nation's largest collection of western lowland gorillas. Ivan is well known for his paintings, which he "signs" with a thumb-print.

Katherine lives in California with her husband and two children.

2.0 out of 5 stars Open ended, May 17, 2001

I loved the whole series, especially book 11. I was waiting for a tremendous climax to the series and felt let down. The book just finished without finishing and left us all wondering. K.A. Applegate built us up for a grand finale and a battle against Ka Anor. She let us down with a quick fix but no answers. There were so many questions that one has to feel she lost interest or just wasn't selling enough of the series. I'm left dissappointed and waiting for Everworld 13, Conclude the Confusion.

I was very disappointed with the ending of the book, and the series. It was built up to be such a big finale, and then it just ended. I think the series should continue. Everworld was great, dont get me wrong about that, just the ending should have been more detailed. But like I said the series should not end at all. Im the quiet, loser, geeky, loner type, and im really into mythology(BLAH I CANT SPELL!!) and for me, everworld was a way for me to come home after a long day of harsh reality and lost in a world of fantasy, magic, princesses, king, dwarves, elves and some much more. KA APPLEGATE DONT END END SOMETHING SO WONDERFUL THAT MAKES SO MANY PEOPLE HAPPY!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Heartbraking, April 19, 2003

I don't read books very often. I sort of pick them up and read, and if it dosen't hook my I put it down, fearing it would be a waste of my time. Very few books have actually caught my interest. Well 4, actually, The Hobbit, FOTR, TTT, and ROTK. And then, out of pure luck, I pick up a book off a shelf in a book store in the teen series section, and much to my suprise a book hooks me. A tale of 5 kids, my age, getting themselves into some kind of alternate world. You had feminist, the hero, the brains, and the joker, and the enigma. Senna. An absolutely wonderful tale of mystery, action and adventure. And as time grew on you connected with these characters, you started to understand who they were, because you were hearing what they thought about themselves and at the same time others thought about them. You become so connected with this story, and you hope its the kind of series where there will be a new one out every two months for you to go and enjoy for a long time. And then, book 12, you see the name. "Entertain the End". The End? What!!!!. Ok, so it's got to be pretty good you say to your self. And then you get to the last pages of the book. Only a few pages left, maybe three. And we were still in Hel's cavern. But how, there was a war that had to happen? David and Christopher had to make a glorious death in battle, or live out to be kings. Jalil had to make all of everworld electronic. April had to stand up and show people what women could really do. And then, these books that you have poored over for hours, connecting with, simply end. One of the very few book I ever enjoyed just ended, rolled over and died. The author whose books I followed so heartedly just got pushed aside so she could write some space age thing. I don't know what to say, It ended, but I don't think it should have. It would have been like Tolkien taking Frodo to Mt. Doom and right before he got there ended the story for no reason. This author hasn't done a very good job ending the series, and I pray that perhpas one day she might come back. In the mean time lets rally the everworld troops and flood scholastics email or something. Call me crazy, but I loved this series deepley, and I don't appreciate it ending like it did.
