Editorial Reviews

Biography of the life of Dorothy Day (Kelly). The title refers to the religious practice of treating all people, no matter how poor or humble, as if they were visiting angels. Day was a famous activist and philanthropist of the 20's and 30's. The film traces her growth - mostly spiritual and religious - as she left journalism to become a suffragette in Greenwich Village. Eventually, Day converted to Roman Catholicism and dedicated the rest of her life to helping the poor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational biography November 5, 2000
Format:VHS Tape
Although many people have not seen this biographical movie about the life of Dorothy Day, the co-founder of the Catholic Worker, an organization dedicated to helping the poor, it provides a clear and well-crafted image of Day's life. Kelly does an outstanding job, as well as Sheen and a then little-known Heather Graham as a fragile alcoholic. If the story of Dorothy Day intrigues you and you want to know more about her remarkable life, from journalist to single-mother to helper of the poor, this movie will definitely provide you with answers. It is a heart-warming and spiritual journey. Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Introduction to a Modern Saint June 3, 2001
Format:VHS Tape
This video was an introduction, for me, to Dorothy Day, and the whole Catholic Worker movement, as it was begun. It made me want to know more (even though I am not a Catholic)! The acting was quite well done, and Moira Kelly was convincing as a passionate Dorothy Day. It is worth sharing, as it is quite an incredible story of faith and history.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Dorothy Day Story May 27, 2002
Format:VHS Tape
This video portrayed the life of Dorothy Day, a remarkable woman, who with her passion for Christ started the Catholic Worker movement.
A special movie... One that is not at all light-hearted, but one that will challenge you and make you think differently about the value of human dignity.
If you are in the mood for something different, a movie that will bring you closer to your own faith, I recommend this one. It made me reevaluate my priorities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dorothy Day: She walked the talk January 22, 2000
Format:VHS Tape
Here is a woman, who was not afraid of sharing her believes, her journey as a human being. She lived her life to it's fullest. Her vision of love, peace and justice for humanity became her whole living experience. Like Christ, she became one of us and lived as an angel among us. This video is a wonderful tribute to Dorothy Day and her vision that continues today.

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love this movie January 11, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
I couldn't wait to see this movie. I have read many of Dorothy Day's writings, and I certainly consider her a modern-day saint. This is made even more compelling by virtue of the fact that she came in to the Catholic Church via a true conversion experience. Her life story is extremely provocative in terms of how Christ asks us to address the poor--do we take political action? Individual action? Is this best addressed through policy, or through the Gospel?

And questions about our own materialism emerge: Who among us should be called to a life of voluntary poverty? All of us? Some? A special few? Dorothy Day's life holds a mirror up to our own lives, and begs us to answer these hard questions.

I liked the movie, but didn't love it. Moira Kelly did a fine job in the role of Dorothy Day, and portrayed the young Dorothy as feisty and sensual. Martin Sheen, as Dorothy's soulmate and collaborator in The Catholic Worker, Peter Maurin, was almost a sideshow. I had hoped to see more of that relationship, and the influence he had on Dorothy.

I guess it was the tone of the movie that I objected to--it was a little too "Lifetime" and lacked the gravitas of the great calling Dorothy fulfilled. It connected too few dots for me, other than giving me a few dots on the chronology of Dorothy's life. Perhaps the story should have been more focused on one seminal event or two. Perhaps it should have tried harder to answer just one of the questions Dorothy Day's life raises for the rest of us. In the end, I think it tried to do too much.

But I was certainly grateful for the opportunity to watch the story, and have her life colored in for me a bit. I was thrilled to see that the movie had been made, and it should have been made. Kudos to the cast and crew for giving us this look into the life of Dorothy Day--I just wish it had more depth.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is not the Dorothy Day Story... February 18, 2013
By John
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
If you want to know the real Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin then read their books: Duty of Delight, The Long Loneliness or Loaves and Fishes, etc. You will see that the characters in the movie in no way reflect their lives. Most of the story is dramatized fiction and is not consistent with their biographies. Quite frankly I turned it off after 45 minutes. Perhaps good theater but it did little justice to the contributions made by Day, Maurin and the Catholic Worker movement. I was deeply disappointed.

A very well made film with excellent performances and interesting people. Ms Day is a perfect example of what it means to love people the way Jesus Christ loves people.

It did not cover her childhood much. She had been connecting with God since then. This shows that she is a true saint.

The story is one that I think more people need to hear. The past does not form us. God forms us, but we must be willing to follow when he calls. Read more
