Book Description

May 1, 2009
As a teen, Kristy Smith spent her nights dreaming of a college scholarship - dreams that ended abruptly when she became pregnant. Now Kristy works hard to support her young son, Jason, and her ailing grandmother, staving off regrets about the chances that slipped away. When Craig Houston became a pastor, he envisioned making a difference in some distant, poverty-stricken country, not dealing with youth groups and shut-ins in a tidy suburb like Fairbrook. But things aren't always what they seem. Soon, Craig finds locals who need guidance even if they'll never admit it - like Kristy's best friend, Shana, who's always strived to be the perfect daughter; Renee, a pregnant teen trying to make it on her own; and Kristy herself, a vibrant and loving young woman unaware of just how much she has to offer. One by one, the residents of Fairbrook are about to learn that the future can surprise and redeem us, especially when there is courage and true friendship in abundance, and a little help from an unexpected source...

More About the Author

Judy Duarte always knew there was a book inside her, but since English was her least favorite subject in school, she never considered herself a writer. An avid reader who enjoys a happy ending, Judy couldn't shake the dream of creating a book of her own.

That dream became a reality in 2002, when Silhouette released her first Special Edition. Since then, more than thirty of her books have hit the shelves, including three women's fiction novels and two novellas.

Her stories have touched the hearts of readers around the world, landing her a prestigious Reader's Choice Award. In 2009, she won the Maggie and finaled in the Inspirational category of the Rita® with MULBERRY PARK. And in 2010, ENTERTAINING ANGELS finaled in the Rita®, won the Maggie, and placed second in the Inspirational Readers Choice.

When she's not cooped up in her writing cave, Judy spends time with her somewhat enormous, but delightfully close family near the beach in Southern California.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-written & very enjoyable, February 12, 2010

This review is from: Entertaining Angels (Paperback)
"Entertaining Angels" is religious general fiction about people who feel inadequate, unloved, or regretful and beaten down by past mistakes and sorrows but who discover God is at work in their lives. It's an uplifting and inspirational novel that reminded me of the TV show "Touched by an Angel," but from the human's viewpoint and no big "I am an angel" reveal at the end.

I really bonded with the characters and wanted to know what happened to them. They were smart, but imperfect, and had realistic struggles and regrets. The world-building was good, and the pacing was very good.

Many of the characters were Christians, but they only referred to God, not Jesus. There was no preaching or "Jesus is the only way" comments. Non-Christian readers would probably enjoy this novel unless they're strongly anti-God.

There was no sex. The minor amount of bad language was in the "he cussed" style. Overall, I'd recommend this novel as well-written and enjoyable clean reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written book, May 25, 2010

This review is from: Entertaining Angels (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I've read in a long time in the Christian genre. The story is about people, the mistakes they make, and how it impacts their lives as well as the lives of others. The story starts with a new minister coming to a small town in California. He became a minister because of a promise to God (a bargain really, to save a family member from dying) but never felt really called to the profession. Three other characters that intertwine themself in the story is a pregnant, homeless teen, a single mother who became pregnant as a teen, and a woman who carries around the guilt of having an abortion as a teen. In the end, everyone resolves their issues but the story is mostly about the journey of how each finally reaches their destination of forgiving themselves (with a little heavenly help from an angel who appears as a homeless man). The reading is easy, the writing is good and descriptive, the story is wholesome. If you like Christian fiction, I am sure you will enjoy this book as well as her series. This is actually the second book in her serial.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to read with my pre-teen daughter, July 10, 2011
This review is from: Entertaining Angels (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading this book and my daughter did too. It tells a good story while also highlighting the realities of pregnancy, teenage sex, abortion and the forgiveness and healing that God brings from that pain. Nice real book to combat all the rubbish that tv and other media dish out about "love and romance" (sex) without consequences--not that this book doesn't have some great romance in it! I also loved the homeless angel and the redemption for the "rich white lady" whose family doesn't appreciate her. I lent mine out and plan to get another to pass around to my daughter's friends!
