Book Description

February 13, 2006
Fans of a certain multi-award-winning HBO® dramatic series and lovers of fine eating everywhere made The Sopranos Family Cookbook a runaway #1 bestseller, thanks to its intimate vignettes and delectable Old Country recipes. But that just got the party started. Now comes the ultimate guide to making every event the perfect occasion, served up by the Garden State's most gracious hostess, Carmela Soprano.
From graduation parties to holiday gatherings to poolside barbecues, Carmela gives you everything you need to keep your personal crew as happy as a clam in red sauce: over 75 delicious new Neapolitan-based recipes as well as scores of Soprano-approved tips on picking the ideal location, choosing tasteful decorations, whipping up the best drinks, and selecting the right music. Sweetening the festa are dozens of never-seen illustrations and insightful commentaries from Soprano relatives and intimates. You'll find "AJ" Soprano's confirmation invitation, advice on "party anxiety" from therapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi, a term paper by Meadow Soprano on "Why My Grandmother Can't Cook," advice from family friend Paulie Walnuts on throwing a surprise party, and much, much more.
Unsure about wine? Follow the advice of Artie Bucco, proprietor of the renowned Nuovo Vesuvio restaurant in Newark, New Jersey: "If you have steak, a `big' meat dish, think of a `big' red wine like a California Burgundy. I guess you could match it with a big white wine, too, but I don't know of any big white wines."
Want to surprise with a birthday gift? Model yours after what Carmela plans on giving her husband, waste management executive Tony Soprano, on his fiftieth: a Dean Martin impersonator, an outdoor screening of his favorite film, The Public Enemy, starring James Cagney, and a monogrammed putter. (But no ritzy watch. He has a dozen of them.)
Planning a wedding? Find inspiration in the vision of Carmela's sister-in-law, Janice Soprano Baccilieri: "As guests enter a cathedral of pines, they would pass an ancient wishing well where they could deposit small presents or deep thoughts about life and love. Ideally, I would love for the whole ceremony to be done in the nude, but unfortunately, the time for that kind of pagan openness has long passed."
Flustered by funerals? Heed the wise suggestions for his own wake from Tony's Uncle Corrado "Junior" Soprano: "A lot of food, no crap, a lot of homemade Bucassi vino, a nice speech from Bobby Bacala, since he was always the nicest to me of all those bums, and me singing like Caruso on the Victrola."
In Carmela's words: "What's closer to a celebration of life than celebrations? Look for them, jump into them, charger plates and all, and have a ball."

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun book with great food!, February 12, 2006
By
This review is from: Entertaining with the Sopranos (Hardcover)
I have now seen everything! A book on entertaining from America's favorite mob family, the Sopranos. And what a fun and tasty book it is. It's an inside look at the fictional television family from the perspective of what good entertaining is: a mix of good food, tips and techniques and vignettes about entertaining from the Soprano's family and friends.

The book covers all occasions from Baptisms, Communions and Confirmations to Graduation Parties, Bridal Showers and Receptions, Holidays, Birthdays and Small Events for Women Only and Men Only.

I enjoyed the logical suggestions by Charmaine Bucco when discussing the timeline to "pull off" an event. I chuckled when reading "When Things Go Terribly Wrong" and I laughed out loud reading Bobby Bacala's tips for controlling the out-of-control guest.

I actually read the directions for the proper way to fold napkins and learned some things about expensive cigars and poker etiquette. And I drooled over the recipes.

The Spaghetti Pie is delicious, not to mention easy to make. The Green Bean, Potato, and Red Onion Salad is scrumptious and the ingredients are probably already in your kitchen just waiting for you to use them. The Insalata Caprese will make your mouth water and the Potato Pie and Roasted Potatoes with Rosemary and Garlic will "hit the spot." But the Anginetti (Lemon Knot Cookies) is simply mouth watering.

Armchair Interviews says: If you're a fan of the Sopranos or you just want a fun read with 75 scrumptious recipes for all occasions, Entertaining with the Sopranos is the book to buy. It is the complete guide to entertaining complete with wonderful photographs and interviews with your favorite mob family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rucker's Best Yet!!, March 20, 2006
This review is from: Entertaining with the Sopranos (Hardcover)
Allen Rucker continues to have a handle on brilliant and entertaining writing. The recipes are fabulous, the pictures are tops - but the sidebar stories and historical/background info is interesting and captivating! Rucker is the author to follow - he brings humor and down-to-earth thoughts to his work!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Sopranos fans! ... and here's a good recipe..., April 16, 2007
This review is from: Entertaining with the Sopranos (Hardcover)
As others have said, the book is a hoot. I especially loved the interview with "Uncle June," who can't stay focused and keeps wandering off on tangents. I did not find too many recipes I wanted to make, but I did try the Pizza Rustica (Easter Pie). I took quite a few liberties with the recipe, including using a ready-made Pillsbury crust, and using only prosciutto and a little bacon instead of all the capicola ("gabagool") and other meats that are suggested. I also didn't use cubes of mozzarella, but did include two cloves of minced garlic which I sauteed with the bacon and prosciutto. The pie was easy, tasted FABULOUS, and looked very pretty and professional when it came out of the pan! It will definitely become a staple in our house.
