6 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Mayank Agarwal on January 6, 2012
Format: Hardcover
This is the most comprehensive book on the business of the media and entertainment industry that I have come across yet. The discussion in Chapter One on the economic principles and trends driving "leisure" time and spending was especially interesting. The book goes on to cover movies, music, television, publishing, and even gambling quite well. This breadth of coverage was especially helpful, as every entertainment product can be thought of as competing for the same leisure dollars (to some extent).

The only area I found information lacking was the impact of the Internet. There is some discussion on how the Internet is changing the landscape, but not as deep and factual as I would have liked. I hope that the next edition covers this aspect more thoroughly.

All in all, a great resource for anyone trying to understand the business of entertainment.

Harold Vogel's Entertainment Industry Economics is an invaluable guide to the economics of the various entertainment industries. The guide breaks down the entertainment business into its parts: films, music, games, etc. and dissects each part with good explanations and clear graphs and statistical data. For lawyers who want to know about the industry, the guide is a great start.

The term "thought leadership" has lost much of its punch, but this book really is ahead of the pack. Highly recommended for everyone in the business of entertainment, especially those setting strategy and involved in contract negotiations (including artists).

Was told it would be pretty dry to get through but I'm enjoying it so far. Vogel shares a lot of great points that are springboards for discussion and critical thinking on the reader's part. One of the few textbooks I actually don't mind reading.
