5.0 out of 5 stars The 9-weeks, 10 weeks at No. 1 year, February 5, 2005
This review is from: Entertainment Weekly: Greatest Hits 1981 (Audio CD)
I'd have to say that 1981 had songs that stayed 9 to 10 weeks at No. 1, such as Endless Love, Physical, Bette Davis Eyes and others. But we never got tired of them. Foreigner's Waiting For A Girl Like You was stuck at 2 for some 10 to 11 weeks or so. That's happened lately with two of singer Usher's hits in 2004 with his songs spending 10 weeks or so at No. 1. But there were lots of good songs in '81. There seemed to be an adult contemporary slant on pop that year, a sense of more mature songs to get away from the fun disco songs that dominated the late 70s. There were several ballad hits too. That shows a lot on this album. Air Supply did some very nice adult pop that year. The music scene changes in cycles and that shows here. But Rick Springfield exploded that year with Jessie's Girl, and while he had some teen appeal, he attracted many listeners to the songs he wrote. Very challenging rock that he made in the '80s. This is a very comprehensive and well done album that they put together to represent 1981.
