5.0 out of 5 stars What a Collection!
This is such a great album! All of the year's best artists on one CD! There's INXS, Bobby McFerrin (you know, the don't worry be happy guy?), Billy Ocean, NKOB, the list goes on and on. My personal favorite is INXS, but everything on here is good. A great pick!

One of the weaker sets in this series isn't a total loss thanks to a slew of guilty pleasures in Eric Carmen's "Make Me Lose Control," Terence Trent D'arby's Prince knockoff "Wishing Well," INXS' "Need You Tonight," and Boy Meets Girl cheesy pop gem "Waiting for a Star to Fall." Sadly, this is all offset by some really dreadful...

If you love the 80's, then this is the CD for you! You'll love the tracks, especially INXS' big hit "Need You Tonight".

Sadly, this is all offset by some really dreadful junk by Taylor Dane, Rick Astley, Billy Ocean, Expose, and the highly offensive "Don't Worry, Be Happy," by the normally talented Bobby McFerrin. Missing from this set: Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car," Edie Brickell's "What I Am," Midnight Oil's "Beds Are Burning," R.E.M's "Stand," and Pet Shop Boys' "What Have I Done to Deserve This."

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers 1988 fully!, October 4, 2004
This review is from: Entertainment Weekly: Greatest Hits 1988 (Audio CD)
I thought that the music of 1988 was very expressive. Sometimes the '87 songs that were number 1 in '88 overshadowed the 1988 released songs and albums. But this is a good representation of the year. I still like Parents Just Don't Understand, which is what Will Smith continues to do today with his fun songs. New Kids on the Block took over '89, but it was '88 that they started out in a big way. Get Outta My Dreams and Wishing Well dominated the first half of the year. And I still love Al B Sure's sexy Nite and Day! Boy Meets Girl had a good debut, even though they had a hit writing a Whitney Houston hit a year before. Expose's Seasons Change sounds beautiful today. This album smartly covers the sounds of that year, and as a high school graduate from 1988, it's long overdue that they respected this year!

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of 80's hits that needs to get more noticed, November 16, 2001

As soon as I saw the track list to Entertainment Weekly: Greatest Hits 1988, I knew I had to buy it right away. I can't speak for everyone, but in my opinion, this album has a spectacular lineup of songs.

There's a "boy band" song that is actually pretty good ("You Got It (The Right Stuff)," popular songs that just about all music fans have heard at one time or another ("Need You Tonight," and "Don't Worry Be Happy"), and many under rated songs that don't get enough radio play even on the 80's stations, such as Waiting For A Star To Fall" and my favorite, "Make Me Lose Control."

Not only is there some GREAT music, the booklet is also worth something for 80's nuts. For each song, it tells you the highest position on the pop charts that the song reached, when it made its chart debut, and a couple of things about each artist and/or their song that makes for good trivia. For example, if you read the booklet, you'll learn such facts that Expose was the "First group in history to pull four top 10 hits from a debut album" and that the song, "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" was almost completely banned in Britain because of its "suggestive" title.

Whether or not you like this album depends on whether you like the songs or not. If you like these songs or great music from the late 80's, or know someone who would, I definitely recommend purchasing Entertainment Weekly: Greatest Hits 1988!
