Book Description

September 4, 2012 Embrace

The war between Exiles and Angels is on — and she's wanted by both sides.

The hotly anticipated follow-up to Embrace, Entice ramps up the captivating combination of angel mythology, forbidden romance and intense action. Seventeen-year-old Violet Eden's whole life changed when she discovered she is Grigori – part angel, part human.

Her destiny is to protect humans from the vengeance of exiled angels. Knowing who to trust is key, but when Grigori reinforcements arrive, it becomes clear everyone is hiding something - even her partner, Lincoln.

And now Violet has to learn to live with her feelings for him while they work together to stay alive and stop the exiles from discovering the key to destroy all Grigori. It isn't easy. Especially when the electricity between her and exile Phoenix ignites, and she discovers his hold over her has become more dangerous than ever.

The race halfway across the world to find the one artifact that could tilt the balance of power between Angels and Exiles brings them to the cradle of civilization, where Violet's power will be pushed to the extreme. And the ultimate betrayal exposed.

"Could I love this series more? Fast paced action, a strong warrior heroine, a forbidden romance. The first book is super romantic, and this one is action packed." - Justine Spark Book Club

"Amazing history, hot romance, twisted suspense and even a character named Phoenix! All packed into a complicated world that leaves Violet unsure who to trust. Unputdownable." - Justine Spark Book Club

"If you're into The Vampire Diaries, you'll love this book." - Seventeen.com Book Club

"Fans (like me!) of kick-ass-warrior-chick books like Vampire Academy will embrace this series for the adrenaline-rush/heart-pumping romance combo it provides." - Justine Spark Book Club

" Violet remains an engaging, contemporary protagonist whose absorbing narrative interweaves intricate mythology, action suspense, and romantic complexities. Vibrant returning and new characters-including Violet's pal Steph, Grigori-in-training Spencer, and punk goth Zoe-further enliven the narrative, and the tantalizing ending will leave series readers anticipating the follow-up." - Booklist

4.0 out of 5 stars Live To Read September 9, 2012
By Chels
Format:Hardcover
Those who have not read Embrace should look into reading that one first. The second book in the series, Entice, jumps right into the plot. Violet must learn more about the Grigori and she just might delve into a relationship with Lincoln. As Violet begins to figure out the difference between light and dark angels and even the difference between one light angel and another, she begins to realize that there are not many people she can trust other than herself. Violet is on her own in the Grigori mystery and people seem to be hiding things from her.

Lincoln is as easy to fall in love with as he was in the first book. His charismatic, loving, and "enticing" character will likely keep the reader reading even if he/she doesn't like the rest of the plot. The romance between Lincoln and Violet is more of the build-up variety, it's easy to get sucked in from the first page. Their characters feel so real together, their relationship enviable. The other characters are just as fun. The reader should be able to tell the Jessica Shirvington invested a lot of time on her secondary characters. The secondary characters are far from bland, they feel as alive as Lincoln and Violet. With the plot's action, mystery, romance, and intrigue and the larger-than-life characters, this book is recommended to young adult/teen readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enchanting Thrill Ride Full of Action and Romance! October 6, 2012
Format:Hardcover
'Entice' is the second book in a young adult paranormal series that focuses on our heroine, Violet Eden, as she continues to come to grips with her new identity as a Grigori - part angel and part human. On top of this, she has to focus on the return of Phoenix (and what that may mean for her), the arrival of Grigori from New York, and her ever growing feelings for Lincoln. When word that Phoenix is looking for the Scripture spreads, Violet and her fellow Grigori must rush to get there first. Will they get there in time to stop Phoenix and who among them is betraying them?

After reading and loving the first book in the series, I had high hopes for this book. I'm glad to say that I definitely wasn't disappointed. The story picks up where the first left off with ease, and I was right back in the story before I knew it. The book is very well written and was fast-paced - which made me unable to put it down. The characters are multi-layered and very likeable, and we are able too see a lot of character growth in the second book. The amount of detail put into the backstory and the intricate world of the angels and Grigori that the author created is incredible. I absolutely loved all the varied aspects of it - the hierarchy of angels, the different Grigori powers, all the detailed history - I think that this is a huge strength for the series and it had me completely enthralled. The romance in the novel between Violet and Lincoln is perfect. They have a complicated relationship, but the love they feel is undeniable and pulls at your heart. I can't say enough about this book or the series to relate how much I enjoyed it. It's a mysterious and enchanting world that I can't get enough of - and now I will be desperately waiting for the next book (even though it feels like forever until it will be released). Very highly recommended!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love This Series! November 26, 2012
By acaito
Format:Hardcover
I'm addicted to this series and I'm angry at the Australians. Well, not angry. Jealous. They already have the third book (it doesn't come out in the US until March) and fourth book (I don't even know when this comes out in the US). I'm not allowing myself to look at the reviews for either of these books - it'll be too cruel.

Anyway, on to the review.

One of my issues with this book is the lack of Phoenix. I know he's the "bad guy," but I love him and I want more of him. (He didn't show up in the novel until page 122 and disappeared until 306, with sporadic appearances from then until the end.) When we first see Phoenix he reveals a very interesting connection between Violet and himself - and I LOVE it. I love this plot element that Shirvington throws into the storyline. So perfect.

Also, you can tell he still has feelings for Violet - and I think she still has feelings for him as well. Violet mentions there are times when she catches his eyes and can see pain/worry/love, etc in his eyes. I mean, if she doesn't want him, I'll take him.

Maybe one of the reasons I'm Team Phoenix is because I can't really see Violet's attraction to Lincoln. I feel ike we don't really see him enough to get it. He was present in the first handful of chapters in Embrace - and we've known Violet liked him before then, with her feelings returned - but then he was pretty much gone until the end of that book. (Ha, I just realized it's like Phoenix and Lincoln switched number of appearances for this book.) We know Lincoln and Violet had this "forbidden love," but I don't see it. The love aspect. Why is she so hung up on him? What makes him such a great guy? I don't get it. *Until I got to page 228 - but I'm not spoiling that :)

Another thing that annoyed me about the Lincoln-relationship is that he would repeatedly tell Violet that they couldn't be together, but then throw out this little line: "I couldn't go through watching someone else...not again." You either want her or you don't! If you two can't be together that's one thing, but don't throw a tantrum when she gravities toward somebody else.

Violet annoyed me in the beginning of the novel. She was so hung up on her feelings for Lincoln and the fact that he was lying again (we know how she feels about lies). I just wanted her to get over him it and do what needs to be done. However, as the book went out she became much more likable and tolerable. As much as her obsession with Lincoln annoyed me, I have to admire her dedication to helping him and protecting him. I also love how he protects her (we see more of this in the later half of the novel than the first half).

Another thing I liked about Entice verses Embrace is Shirvington focused less on the love triangle (unlike I've done here) and more on the mythology of Angels. She brings in aspects of the Bible and talks about Angels influences on things that have happened here. I loved her idea of the Scriptures and how they got to Earth and what happened to them.

This definitely opens the door for the next two books - especially with how she left us hanging at the end: "Interested in a trade... lover?" Oh, Phoneix. Love you!

Over all, I loved this book. I love the addition of the new characters, Steph and Griffin can do no wrong FYI, and I really think Shirvington did a better job of going in depth with the old and new characters, especially in her development of Violet's character. I did feel like the beginning dragged a little bit, but the plot elements and story line were definitely necessary for the storyline and influencing what happens in the latter half of the book.

"Just then, the strangest thing happened. He gave me his emotion. For just the blink of an eye - a blink of mercy - I felt his need... I looked to him again, and somehow knew we shared this reality of terrible choice, vengeful motivation, and all things lost - most of all, friendship and love" (391).
