Much better than it's reputation.,
By Mad Reveller "amidnightdreary@earthlink.net" (Delaware, OH USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Entity (Mass Market Paperback)
This short review only to offer a different perspective of this novel. It is true, there are several flaws with this novel. I know; I've read it twice. However, this novel is much better than its critics have always considered it to be. And irrespective of it's claim to being based on a true incident(I, myself, don't really care), the novel succeeds as a supernatural investigation, although it isn't a "mystery/detective" novel.
In fact, I found that the book developed its supernatural components in very satisfyin rich layers. While it's true the book is too long and too wordy, it is nonetheless exceptionally interesting; and therefore, I didn't care reading the "extra" pages. In fact, I actually I enjoyed reading them. Imagaine That! Again, in terms of the supernatural component and plot; it has a depth that I haven't found in other horror novels, even well-regarded ones. And for this reason, I highly recommend it. Come to it with this mindset: pretend that it is indeed a true account; that is, pretend you're reading a true crime novel and not a fictional one. I think you would not be disapointed aside from its obvioius flaws. And be prepared to read a novel that's a little too long. If you're too impatient, you'll get a bit frustrated. But if you're motivated, you'll soak up the supernatural like you haven't before. Then, get some popcorn and watch the movie, which is also much better than most critics have regarded it to be. Boo!

I really loved this book. I've seen the movie, before I read the book and I love the book a million times more than the movie. You really get into the life of Carlotta (Carla in the movie). You get flashbacks of her life from when she was a child, to her first and second marriage. And the ending IS different. This book scared me constantly while reading it, it kind of freaks me out to hear that it's based on a true story. All in all, if you find a copy of it, BUY IT... it's now out of print, and worth your time for reading..

Ghost story I've spoken of most often!,

I will agree with others, that the novel is a bit wordy, however the story is scary. What made my skin crawl the most was the police report/eye witness account of the boyfriend, this just creeped me out!
I really enjoyed the movie also, I believe it stayed true to the important bits in the book. If you enjoy this type of story, a must read, as I mention in the title, I have spoken of this book/story more often then any other "based on real events" ghost story.

A disappointing Ghost Story,
By Mr J R Downes (Northleach, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Entity: A novel (Hardcover)
In this supposedly truth based tale of a woman becoming the subject of sexual attacks by a ghost, author Frank De Felitta tries to recreate the success of his best novel to date `Audrey Rose'. This time the formula doesn't work. The Entity is excessively overlong and apart from one incident near the beginning of the book, scare free. The well defined characters appear to exist in a vacuum. The tone changes later as the author presents both sides of the argument as to whether the events are real or just in the mind of Carlotta, the woman to whom the attacks happen. But, as no questions are answered even this comes across as just a cop out. Very disappointing.

Frank De Felitta tells this story wonderfully! If I am correct, I think it was based on a true story. The entity follows and horrifies one woman's life and family, even is....detected by proffesionals. It makes you wonder what is really out there and makes you scared to sleep. I give this book a great review, I still get scared just thinking about the whole story.

THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF HAVING A DEMON LOVER...,
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Entity (Mass Market Paperback)
I first read this book over twenty five years ago, when it was first released, and recalled that I had enjoyed it. I recently spotted it on my daughter's book shelf and decided to give it another go-around. Unfortunately, I cannot say that it was anything about which to write home to mother. My memory of the book was far better than its reality.
The book is supposedly based upon a true story in which an attractive young woman named Carlotta is beset by something called an incubus, which is a demon that assumes male form and descends upon women, often while they are sleeping, and proceeds to have sexual intercourse with them. Tired of having this spectral rapist have his way with her, Carlotta seeks the help of a handsome psychiatrist who believes that she is mentally ill and that her experiences are simply in her mind and a manifestation of her illness. He, unfortunately, falls in love with her. Carlotta, finding that the psychiatrist is unable to prevent her nightly orgiastic experiences, consults with members of a paranormal investigative team from the same university with which the psychiatrist is affiliated. While the team that investigates paranormal activity seems to be onto something, the psychiatrist considers their investigation to be an intrusion into his bailiwick, and a clash of the opposing disciplines ensues, while Carlotta and her incubus are hot and heavy. This is a plot driven, rather than character driven, story that, while interesting on its face, is not particularly well-written. It tends to drag, as it is too long. It is a book in need of some serious editing. Moreover, there is no resolution of the storyline, which keeps the reader in limbo, a result that is rarely satisfactory. It appears that the author tried to re-create the success of his earlier best-seller, "Audrey Rose", a novel of reincarnation, but was not successful in doing so, producing a book that is marginally entertaining at best.

Although I found the book to have too much detail in this woman's everyday life, it did give you a feel for have normal she was. I do have to admit that it's not as creepy as the Exorcist but it does make you wonder.

The Entity,
This review is from: The Entity (Paperback)
I found this book in a rubbish bin in Wales. I took it home and read it on the metro. It was a silly read. It details a satanic pig which attacks people.
If you buy the book, be careful as the pages are very worn and yellowish, they also smell like evil Entities. |
