Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Season seven of Entourage is the darkest chapter in the show's history to date, and while even long-running series may have one or two Very Special Episodes, an entire season filled with drugs, rejection, and breakups is too heavy for a comedy. After hemming and hawing over doing a stunt himself, Vince (Adrian Grenier) gets into a slight accident that leaves him shaken but craving adrenaline, kicking off a self-destructive spiral that lasts all season. He begins a drug-and-alcohol-fueled relationship with porn star Sasha Grey (as herself), which further diminishes his reputation (especially when he brings her to a business meeting with Stan Lee and he tries to recall where he's seen her before). It doesn't help that Vince is the new face of an imported tequila that Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) is attempting to market. Meanwhile, Ari (Jeremy Piven) reveals a particularly nasty side when he overreacts to the departure of a junior agent he mistreated and believes has aligned with his rival (Carla Gugino). This puts him on even shakier ground with the long-suffering Mrs. Ari (Perrey Reeves), who gives him an ultimatum on their marriage. And while Eric (Kevin Connolly) is newly engaged to Sloane (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and a rising agent in his own right, he faces stiff competition from his brasher, more charismatic associate (Scott Caan). Finally, Johnny (Kevin Dillon) develops a buddy sitcom with John Stamos--but must play Ping-Pong against him to woo him into the taking the part. When Bob Saget steals it from him, Johnny is offered what could be the greatest career move of his life, but he's too offended to consider it: a starring voice-over role (as a gorilla) in his own animated series called "Johnny's Bananas." This story line was the only spark in Entourage's downer of a season, which is commendable for going a different direction but never found the right balance of the elements that made it such a hit series. Even when Grenier and Piven are going through their struggles, they come off more annoying than sympathetic. As the series wraps up next season, here's hoping it finds its spark before the party ends. --Ellen A. Kim

4.0 out of 5 stars The Bizarro Season September 13, 2010
Format:DVD
Caveat Emptor - Buyer beware! For the majority of this series' life, its bread and butter has been Hollywood satire. It's been the funny story of how four guys from Queens with a small amount of guile and virtually no talent have come close to taming Tinseltown.

Past seasons have been summertime bliss. It's been the equivalent of the afterglow you feel leaving a beach-party in a sweet convertible with the rag-top down and the stereo thumping knowing you have crazy stories to tell your friends in the morning.

This season is a sharp departure from all of that. Everything is the inverse of what it was in seasons' past.

The movie star, Vincent Chase, has always been like the (former) planet Pluto. He's loopy, sort of remote and meandering in a different direction than other celebrities in his orbit. His aloofness is what has made him charming, cool and fun - (perhaps because he's the refreshing opposite of the preening divas celebrities normally tend to be.)

But when he emerges from a life-threatening situation in the season's first episode, the Vincent Chase we see is one driven by a cold fury. And this fury takes the entire season into an extremely odd and unexpected direction.

Everyone is affected by this moodswing.

Johnny Drama, who was slowly mounting a comeback before some unfortunate (self-inflicted) mishaps, appears to have completely given up on his dreams. We as viewers have never been privy to Drama when he was not animated by his dual quests for career redemption and to finally be taken seriously as an actor. (What is the B-actor to do when he can no longer find his motivation?

2.0 out of 5 stars I hate to admit it... September 14, 2010
Format:DVD
"Entourage" is one of my favorite shows, and I own every season. This season however has been the weakest yet, as the storylines disrespect the characters we love, and they are almost all depressing. Vince is going the way of Lindsay Lohan. Turtle is a struggling business owner. Drama and Eric are going through the exact same things they did last season. There is a major lack of fun - the balance is just off. I will remain loyal to the show, but this edition of the series is not it's shining moment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Past Sell By Date December 11, 2010
Format:DVD
Entourage has lost the fun that made the show so watchable in its early run and the show is just not that great at pulling off dramatic moments. The character of Sasha Grey brought nothing to the show and the other guest stars were very little fun. The show has gone overboard with celebrity cameos and athlete cameos. The main plot of this season is that Vince is now an adrenaline junkie who has gone off the rails - this fails for several reasons. Vince has for the past six years been a laid back guy and now he is intense? Also no disrespect to Adrien Grenier but he cannot act that well and with his character being more central this season that is more apparent. Turtle is a black hole and his misery is hard to swallow considering how fortunate and lucky he is. The only positives of this season was that it was a great showcase for Jeremy Piven to show off his chops; the stuff with Ari being exposed as a crude and abusive guy makes no sense considering that it was almost a given that thats what his character is known for. To Piven's credit he sells it well and it somewhat believable. Entourage has reached the point that some other shows (Weeds comes to mind) where the show is no longer fun and no longer great. Entourage really went off the rails after Season 3 when nothing bad would happen to the guys at all. Life was really perfect for every single one of them. That wasn't realistic and hurt the show but it was still enjoyable at moments. I appreciate that the show is trying to be more "real" this version of Entourage is disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Season 7-Reality some fans dont understand November 12, 2010
By Fan
Format:DVD
I am a huge fan of Entourage, but I have to admit, all the living large and blowing cash while bedding down every girl in town does get old after a while. Who's life is really like that all the time? Let's face it, people cant handle or stomach the truth sometimes. This season brought more truth to how things really are. Celebrities are constantly in re-hab and clubbing around with the wrong crowd. They are people who have problems just like everyone else. Vince has been sheltered by his constant Entourage of boys. It makes sense that when he finally stikes out on his own of course he's gonna fall, hes never had a challenge in his life, his entourage handled all his "challenges so far".(remember the first 6 seasons guys?) To the people who think this season sucks, go turn on a fairy tale that will give you that yearned for happy ending. We live in real life people, the drug addiction, wanting to change a woman, getting married, and Ari's wife finally saying Enough is Enough are all things that happen in REAL LIFE!! I dont watch the show to escape from my own reality. If you need to watch tv for an escape and then chatise writers for not giving you what you want, you are the ones with issues! Grow up and get therapy already. This show is amazing and I am glad that the writers chose to explore the characters in new depth. Lets be honest, life isnt all champagne and roses. Even movie stars arent perfect and have challenges to help them build their character. It would have been a lie to not show these sorts of things happening, after all, it is Los Angeles. Or perhaps some people writing the bad reviews have never been to Los Angeles, in which case they shouldnt even be commenting on that which they know nothing of.... Read more ›
