Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up–Two high school girls decide to test their boyfriends' fidelity in this lackluster novel based on Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. The format–chat-room conversations, instant messages, and blog excerpts–proves more confusing than innovative. At the urging of a cynical friend, Annie, Bliss and Tamra agree to impersonate exchange students (one from England and the other, in a nod to Mozart's opera, from Albania). They will each spend time in a chat room with the other girl's boyfriend, attempting to lure him into an online romance. Both girls seem convinced that the boys won't cheat, but still throw themselves into the dangerous game. Meanwhile, the guys try to resist but soon weaken. A subplot deals with the cynical friend, Annie, and her reasons for proposing the deception in the first place. The author has limited success at developing the characters, though the boys are more vivid than Bliss and Tamra, who come off as weak and easily manipulated. Teens will probably prefer Lauren Myracle's ttyl (2004) and other books in her Internet Girls series (all Abrams).–Miranda Doyle, San Francisco Unified School District

It's got witty dialogue, romance, surprises--everything a book needs to keep you turning the pages.

Entrapment is an incredibly funny book with believable and extremely interesting characters and great little sub-plot tidbits.
Kyran Wolfe
The entire book was so cute, and it's good for both genders, although the cover may make you think otherwise.

First off, I have to say that I really did enjoy this book. I'd never read a whole story that was told through chat or IM (though many of you will know the TTYL series by Lauren Myracle). This type of writing makes the book go by fast, which is a good thing sometimes...especially if you are looking for an amusing, quick read to fill your time. It would also be great for semi-readers (the ones that only crack a book every now and then) as it would hopefully keep their interest.

As for the actual story, Bliss and Tamra are two friends who are completely in love with their respective boyfriends, Mitch and Beau. However, their dear friend, Annie, is a cynic when it comes to love and she decides that they should test the boys. The girls all come together (with a friend of the boys', Johnson) to hatch a scheme.

They say that Bliss is out of town helping her grandma and Tamra went with her. While they are "missing," Johnson reveals his summer homework to the boys...a chat room for the exchange students going to their school in the fall. Guess what's going to happen? That's right! Bliss and Tamra disguise themselves as Bridget and Tatiana.

The big twist, of course, is that the girls are going to flirt with their friend's boyfriend and not their own to see what they do while their real-life girlfriends are away. Mixed in with this, you start getting some insight into Annie and Johnson's love lives as well. Are they really going to be cynics for the rest of their lives? Maybe...at least in high school, perhaps.

This is definitely a fun concept for a book and it's something I could see some girls actually trying (though please don't; I really felt bad for these boys!). ENTR@PMENT was definitely a funny book that I enjoyed and would recommend.

ENTR@PMENT: A HIGH SCHOOL COMEDY IN CHAT

Gothling, Annie in RL (real life), is suffering because she lost her boyfriend to her best friend. Or her newly former best friend.

Big J is a fickle guy who moves from relationship to relationship. He does have skills with computers, the internet and writes poetry.

Gothling decides that all boys are alike and she wants to share her cruelly won knowledge with her two friends Ms. T and bliss4u. She tries to convince both Ms. T and bliss4u that their boyfriends would easily cheat on them too and makes a bet with them that if they were to pretend to go away for a while and then create new internet identities the boys would soon forget about their promises and fall for their new masks. Gothling asks for Big J's help in setting up a chat room and drawing BoBoy and chessman into the trap.

I really enjoyed this book because it was funny and reminded me of the Shakespeare comedys. The unique format was what allowed me to believe that two girls could fool their boyfriends best friend about who they are. The dialogue was great and I enjoyed the malapropisms. It did take me a while to get used to the chat and IM format. The author very skillfully inserted description in the chat dialogue. The characters feel real but it is important to remember that the person behind the internet ID could be any age, any gender and from anywhere, and M. Spooner reminds the reader of that a few times. Gothling remains true to her character to the end with her pessimism and biting sense of humor. She does grow also but I won't spoil the ending for you.

I just hope that the girls in my life don't ever try this on me.
