The human story behind many famous products, July 11, 2010
This review is from: Entrepreneurs: The Men and Women Behind Famous Brand Names and How They Made It (Paperback)
This is an enjoyable book about the origins and stories behind many notable brand name products (such as Baskin-Robbins ice cream, Hallmark greeting cards, John Deere equipment, Johnson and Johnson first aid products, and Rolls-Royce automobiles). The book covers 51 brand names with discussions about 2-4 pages each, and about 180 other brand names with brief discussions about half a page each.
The book is written in an informal, anecdotal style that is good for casual reading. The authors do not make any pretenses about writing a serious historical work or a serious guide on how to succeed at business. But, even with its casual, informal style, the book provides many interesting and informative examples of business successes (and failures), the vagaries of business ventures, the importance of innovation in business, and the impact of character and personality on business.
Because the book was published in 1985, it does not cover more recent brand names. An updated version of this book could be worthwhile. But, the dated nature of the book does not lessen its readability or the value of its discussions of many brand names.
