Enviracaire Model 60001,

This review is from: Enviracaire 60001 Grade Air Purifier with IFD Filter (Kitchen)
I suffer from Spring/Summer allergies with sensitivity to other indoor irritants for many years. I have tired other models of air cleaners which I have found to help.
This unit does the job. You don't have to buy very expensive HEPA filter replacements and at its quietest setting you can leave it running in the room where you sleep with the door closed. It will make it possible to get through allergy season without being totally wiped out. I would like to remark about some of the negative reviews of this device. 1. It is not a house cleaner and does not have a charcoal filter in it. It cannot make a household that has continuous heavy smoking smell all clean and fresh. It is not designed to make up for lack of housecleaning such as vacuuming rugs. 2. The particles that cause irritation are not easily seen with the naked eye. If this unit is operated for a reasonable amount of time the pre-filter will catch the bigger pieces of airborne junk such as shredded skin particles - the major component of what people call "dust". The permanent filter will catch the smaller stuff. If you gently knock the permanent filter on a piece of paper this dirt will show. Use a vacuum to clean it out completely. 3. No, this unit does not generate a great deal of ozone and doesn't smell bad when you take it out of the box. Some people's respiratory systems are so sensitive that they react to any amount. Examine the effects of a real ozone generator and compare. The electrostatic mechanism in this air cleaner doesn't even come close. Doing what is necessary to build up your health will reduce the sensitivity. 4. If there is indeed defective units out there shame on Honeywell. That doesn't mean a properly operating unit shouldn't be obtained and given a chance.

Good, But not quiet there yet!,

I VERY MUCH ENJOYED THIS UNIT WHEN IT WAS NEW IT DID EVERYTHING THAT WAS STATED ON THE BOX.However, I now need to replace the IFD filter due to the accumulation of nicotene on it and can not find one anywhere. I purchased two units at once for around $450.00.If I had used them in a "dust" atmosphere they would still be great! Honeywell should have tested on Nicotene and smoke odors before touting the phrase permanent in reference to smoke and nicotene. I am sadly disappointed in a company, who over the years, I have purchased many of their products.

This is a replacement for the unit I got from Sam's Club a year ago. I have been looking for a good air cleaner with permanent filter. The first one I got from Sam's uses electrostatic precipitation which is not very efficient. In addition, it generates a lot of ozone in the room by the UV germicidal lamp. Thank God that there was a recall on that unit and I got a full refund after 10 months of use. Then I found this unit that costs 1/3 less after a $50 rebate. This one uses a so-called permanent filter that can be cleaned by vacuum. I have been using it almost every night for 2 months. The filter still needs not to be cleaned yet (YMMV). It has 3 speed settings, but only the low one can be used at night due to the noise. The timer is easy to set, but it will be better if there is backlight on the display when programming it. The rebate was received in 8 weeks as promised.

I bought this purifier in hope to get rid of tobacco smoke odour in my apartment left over from the previous tenant. First unpleasant surprize was when I openned the box was that this filter smells! It smelled with acetone plastic glue so much that I had to run it for a week on the balcony in order for this glue smell to go away. After that I ran the unit inside my apartment and it did not produce any change in the air quality - the tobacco smoke odour was still there and you could see the dust particles floating in the beam of sunlight from the window. When I opened up the filter and checked it, it had no dust accumulated at all an what I notised that the quality with which it was assembled was kind of low. The plastic edges of the casing were rough and you could see the glue stains all over the IFD filter. This thing is definitely not worth two hundred dollars. Despite the fact that I had to pay shipping, I returned this unit back to the store.

I have adjusted my expectations,
This review is from: Enviracaire 60001 Grade Air Purifier with IFD Filter (Kitchen)
I have owned my unit for years. We have no pets, we don't smoke (we do burn candles infrequently), and the predominant issue we have to deal with is dust and pollen.
I was disappointed when I first got this unit because it did not "seem" to clean the air as well or as thoroughly as I expected. However, I can attest that the filter in my particular unit definitely is catching something and getting good and dirty doing it. AND, I notice that in the winter when the doors are mostly kept closed, I never have to dust at all. I am conflicted about the filthy filter. But I find I am not alone (see this review, which includes pictures of the dirty filter [...]I cannot get it to stop looking dirty, but vacuuming it out does appear to "refresh" its performance, which is all I really care about. I have owned other air purifiers that have generated far more ozone than this unit. If this unit generates a large amount of ozone, I don't notice it. At this point, it performs well enough that I have no desire to seek another, and aside from the "filter reset" not working anymore (it is just the timer reset to remind you when to clean the filter), it still performs as well as it did at the beginning. But if I were in the market for a new air purifier (for instance, if this one broke down), I would probably not select this one simply because I never feel I can get the unit clean to my satisfaction. [...] like a really good price for this air purifier. I would buy it again if I were strapped for money, but I still believe I would opt for a better, higher performance air purifier if I could.

I have five dogs in my house and since I purchased this air purifier you can hardly tell I have one.The unit is not that small so you do need space for it.

powder does not stay in filter,
This review is from: Enviracaire 60001 Grade Air Purifier with IFD Filter (Kitchen)
I purchased this because I wanted a HEPA GRADE FILTER that I would not have to
buy replacement filters for but this is not really a HEPA grade filter. Powder will go from the intake and blow out the top w/o being filtered out very well. . . However it is a fairly good ionizer and removes dust that way. You have to dust more. It cleans the air fairly well in this respect and you get a good feeling when you first turn it on. However I could only give this from between 2 and 3 stars because it does not live up to its specifications. Maybe after a good break-in period it will begin to remove more of the powder and small dust particles- I noticed the "time to clean the filter" status bar has started to work where before it said the filter is always clean. PROs: timer, powerful fan when needed (3 speeds) good ionizer, permanent filter at first removes a little of the feel bad things in the air. CONs: Not really a heap filter all dust not trapped in honeycomb filter design.

Still going almost 8yrs later!!!,
This review is from: Enviracaire 60001 Grade Air Purifier with IFD Filter (Kitchen)
We bought 2 of these air purifiers about 8yrs ago for some white noise for our babies (and felt that the "air purifying" was a plus). We STILL use them twice a day to allow our children good rest with a bit of background noise in addition to music playing. We have a big family and appreciate when everyone is well rested and THIS environaire has really helped accomplish that. My husband vacuums them out every few months. Our 3yr old just put a thick string and a feather in it (which the fan blade cut up) and they were easy to remove from the device. We are so happy with it!

This review is from: Enviracaire 60001 Grade Air Purifier with IFD Filter (Kitchen)
I have chronic bronchitis and have gone through the assortment of air purifiers both with and without replaceable filters. Throughout this process, I learned several things concerning these units. First they are expensive to maintain and they all claim to do a good job. Second, many say they are HEPA TYPE filtration systems. My research has revealed that a genuine HEPA system is one that states TRUE HEPA filtration. I was in need of a sensibly priced air purifier that did not require changing costly filter(s). In reviewing the Enviracaire IFD Purifier (Model 60001) by Honeywell, I came upon a customer review in amazon that was titled: Patients with lungs disease BEWARE!!!, dated March 27, 2011. The review is an interesting read and claims that the Honeywell Model 60001 expels high amounts of ozone that will quickly damage the tissue and cells of your lungs. It also states that the smell of acetone eventually disappears if you leave the filter one or two weeks in the garden running at maximum power. In view of the price and the IFD filtration, I ordered the unit. Concerned to some extent by the above critical review, I conducted additional research prior to placing the unit in operation. The owners manual, under the heading of IMPORTANT NOTE, states that the air purifier complies with U.S. Government limits for acceptable levels of ozone (less than 50 parts per billion by volume of air circulating through the product). The manual further states that people with a history of respiratory problems or heart/lung disease should consult with a physician prior to using this product. I contacted my physician and learned that 50 parts per billion presents no danger. Correspondingly, I located an FDA website that stated the following about ozone:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires ozone output of indoor medical devices to be no more than 0.05 ppm. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that workers not be exposed to an average concentration of more than 0.10 ppm for 8 hours. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends an upper limit of 0.10 ppm, not to be exceeded at any time. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone is a maximum 8 hour average outdoor concentration of 0.08 ppm. The difference here is parts per million versus parts per billion. I placed the unit into operation and have been using it for one week. The unit is working perfectly. There is no odor of acetone, ozone or any other smell. When the unit is placed on high, it is a bit noisy but the unit is running a fan because if you want to clean the air you must move the air. I have not had any form of flare up from my bronchitis, and the air in my bedroom has a much cleaner scent. To date, I am very satisfied with this air purifier. |
