Book Description

0471114421 978-0471114420 November 28, 1995 1
In this important new work, Howard T. Odum, widely acknowledged as the father of systems ecology, lucidly explains his concept of emergy, a measure of real wealth that provides a rational, science-based method of evaluating commodities, services, and environmental goods. Using specific real-world examples, Dr. Odum clearly demonstrates the revolutionary role of emergy in environmental management and policy making.

Environmental Accounting: Emergy and Environmental Decision Making offers environmental professionals--policymakers, managers, ecologists, planners, developers, and activists--a systematic approach to environmental and economic valuation that will eliminate much of the rancor and adversarial decision making that often plagues environmental issues. Specifically, this book:
* Describes the theoretical basis, calculation procedures, and applications of emergy
* Introduces the concept of "transformity," the ratio of emergy (work put into a product) and energy (value received from the product)
* Provides formulas for emergy calculations, procedures for making an emergy evaluation table, and parameters for updating evaluations
* Demonstrates the use of emergy to evaluate environments, minerals, waters, primary energy sources, economic developments, and international trade
* Compares the emergy approach to environmental evaluation with others

Environmental Accounting: Emergy and Environmental Decision Making will help environmental decision makers and the society they serve maximize economic vitality with less trial and error, innovate with fewer failures, and adapt to change more rapidly. It provides the tools they need to arrive at the best policies in resource management, economics, and the environment.

Balancing the economy and the environment-- from the father of systems ecology

Increasing economic dependence on diminishing natural resources has sparked a highly charged debate over the use and fate of the world environment. Environmental Accounting: Emergy and Environmental Decision Making presents a unique method of environmental management based on maximizing real wealth, the whole economy, and the public benefit.

Renowned ecologist Howard T. Odum introduces the concept of emergy to provide a rational alternative to the tug-of-war over the world's most vital assets. Emergy measures the energy put into making a product and is the cornerstone of Odum's revolutionary text. This timely and important book offers key insights into:
* Determining the real value of a product or service
* Transformity, or the relationship between emergy (input) and energy (output)
* Stored wealth, available energy, and the final product
* Balancing economic and environmental needs

Environmental Accounting: Emergy and Environmental Decision Making will help economists, ecologists, policymakers, and planners make more responsible, informed decisions to sustain economic and environmental development.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

A renowned expert in systems ecology presents methods of environmental management based on maximizing the actual wealth produced. Odum describes, in layman terms, the concept of emergy as a means of placing the value of commodities, services and environmental goods of various types on a common basis. He outlines the procedure for making an emergy evaluation table to assess environments, minerals, waters, primary energy sources, economic developments, nations and international trade.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good but you will get short, and more of Odum's model is needed, February 24, 2011

This review is from: Environmental Accounting: Emergy and Environmental Decision Making (Hardcover)
I have been using this book to teach students in energy science, for general aspects of energies and different approaches to an integrated view of energy. So, Exergy and Emergy comes as major players and for this second topic I did try this book, which is quite perfect, except that I realize that you need more material than the one is actually in the book. The model is clearly exposed, however to understand real life applications you need to go for extra help from on line web sites, focused on emergy, including excellent notes from the US EPA agency and other tutorials.
As a whole the book is amazing and gives you the idea of a refreshing approach to the integration of economy and science (particularly the ecology and energy driven ones). The book allows you to understand Odum's Ideas on how to use a different and clear tool to integrate problems like complete ecosystems or even countrywide problems into a common metric, which comes form the natural concept of looking at the total energy that comes into the planet biosphere, which is denoted as biogeosphere, as the reference. the emjoule and empower concepts are derived, so energy and the result of the changes associated with (the transformities) can be used to analyze large (or small) systems.
The book is quite enjoyable, easy to read and you get the sensation that it is necessary to read more about.

For anyone that wants to go into this analysis is better to start from the beginning (as usual), so go for the book of the same author "A prosperous way down", but you can read both at the same time if you like.

So, why not 5 stars?, just because I felt that a book like this one should capture you 100% giving you full capability of going into the subject without the need for extra stuff, so, it could be a 5 but as I did mention, I had to go for more, even I should say that perhaps you need, as a companion, from the same author too the book: "Environment, Power and Society for the Twenty-First Century: The Hierarchy of Energy", so that is why still I believe that 4 stars are ok.
