Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–6—This eco-alphabet covers a wide variety of topics related to natural history and conservation. Each entry ranges from two to five paragraphs and includes a question related to the topic to encourage critical thinking or further discussion and a "Did You Know?" feature that spotlights interesting facts. The topics are quite diverse, ranging from entries about the Amazon rainforest, Jacques Cousteau, and Paolo Lugari to greenhouse gases, plankton, and earthworms. The content doesn't require a lot of background knowledge, and the language is appropriate for elementary audiences. The simple watercolor illustrations are bright and colorful, filling each page. This book could be used to introduce a unit on ecology or the environment. Overall, an appealing and diverse look at environmental issues.—Lindsay Cesari, Baldwinsville School District, NY

Review

An Environmental Guide from A to Z is more than an alphabet book - it's packed cover to cover with fascinating facts about the natural world. The reading level of its text is high enough that any child just learning his or her letters will definitely need help from a parent, sibling, teacher or the like to understand the paragraphs. Each two-page spread also features gentle color illustrations and "Did you know?" factoids. "E is for Energy. Every living thing needs fuel for life. Food fuel makes us go. Nothing moves without energy and most of the energy on the earth comes from the sun. Green plants capture sunlight and convert it to food energy: fruits, vegetables and grains like wheat and corn." A wonderfully educational picturebook, highly recommended. --The Midwest Book Review, April 2009

"An important read. An abecediary for the next generation! It's the world we need, letter by letter." --Author and Environmentalist Bill McKibben

More About the Author

I've lived a lot in my thirty-nine years-and in a lot of places too. From studying history in Vienna, to drinking tea in Boston, teaching golf in North Carolina, eating grits in Georgia, skiing with kids that rip in Colorado, exploring New York City, ice-fishing in Minnesota, cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers and nearly calling California home. My nephew Johnny thinks I'm ninety-three!

Since early on in life, I have loved to learn (even if I didn't always do my homework!). Dad regularly unplugged the lamp next to my bed so I'd put down my book and sleep. My earliest memories are of summers filled with life outdoors -mostly at our grandparents homes in Wisconsin and Michigan. We chased frogs and swam after fish. We pulled weeds in the garden and picked berries. Our family bought roadside sweet corn and Mom organized husking competitions. I napped in the shade under the fruit trees and wondered about becoming a farmer. We climbed trees, explored the woods after rainstorms and even visited the garbage dump to watch bears.

My goal is to get kids hooked on nature. Wondering, wandering, exploring and investigating are critical elements of a healthy childhood. And the same time, it's never been so important for the next generation grow up learning how nature works. As Einstein said, "to understand everything better, look deep into nature." Nature teaches us everything we need to know. It cycles its nutrients and runs on current solar energy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for kids of all ages, July 1, 2009

This review is from: An Environmental Guide from A to Z (Hardcover)
Some books are great for little, tiny ones and some for older children, but this one runs the gamut. If you child is very young, use this as an introductory picture book. You can ask questions about each illustration and pique your child's interest that way. There's a LOT of information in the book that will fascinate older children. My grandchildren, beginning readers, love the fact that the book does not talk down to them, but challenges their reading ability. As they get bigger, I'm sure they will return to this book again and again as a reference. Finally, assuming you're an adult, read it! You'll most likely learn something!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful world on many levels, June 24, 2009
This review is from: An Environmental Guide from A to Z (Hardcover)
This title is a progressive piece of art, with beautiful illustrations showing humankind's march towards a greener world. I especially loved the different levels and layers in which the written text communicates to its young readers, yet it does so in a clean, uncomplicated way. It's the kind of book kids can read or be read to again and again and get something new each time.
