5.0 out of 5 stars Something for kids of all ages, July 1, 2009
By
This review is from: An Environmental Guide from A to Z (Hardcover)
Some books are great for little, tiny ones and some for older children, but this one runs the gamut. If you child is very young, use this as an introductory picture book. You can ask questions about each illustration and pique your child's interest that way. There's a LOT of information in the book that will fascinate older children. My grandchildren, beginning readers, love the fact that the book does not talk down to them, but challenges their reading ability. As they get bigger, I'm sure they will return to this book again and again as a reference. Finally, assuming you're an adult, read it! You'll most likely learn something!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful world on many levels, June 24, 2009
This review is from: An Environmental Guide from A to Z (Hardcover)
This title is a progressive piece of art, with beautiful illustrations showing humankind's march towards a greener world. I especially loved the different levels and layers in which the written text communicates to its young readers, yet it does so in a clean, uncomplicated way. It's the kind of book kids can read or be read to again and again and get something new each time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction to environmental issues., February 4, 2010
This review is from: An Environmental Guide from A to Z (Hardcover)
This book does two things well, that few other late elementary aged books do:

1. Introduces children to environmental concepts without scaring them.

2. Inspires kids to engage and learn more about how the world works around them (both globally, and their own neighborhood).

I've got five children and live in a "environmental conscious" town, yet so many of us don't really understand the issues at their roots. This "Guide" book has been a favorite bedtime read for our 4th grader and she even took it to school and lent it to her teacher. Better yet, it has encouraged her to become more curious and ask more questions. Now, she knows not only is nature a lot of fun, it can also teach us a lot, e.g. nature recycles everything, favors cooperation over competition and runs on current sunshine.

I need my kids to understand the world is full of opportunities, not a world full of problems. This book helps get my kids on the right path.

5.0 out of 5 stars Necessity for Socially Conscious Educators, December 12, 2009
This review is from: An Environmental Guide from A to Z (Hardcover)
This "Environmental Guide From A to Z," for starters, is lushly illustrated, providing a brilliant visual starting point for children beginning to explore, grapple with and wonder about the world around them. As an educator, many of the alphabet pages (which highlight a specific area, person or facet of the environment) provide "fun facts" or trivia that was even brand new for me. Sharing this text with my fifth graders in southern CA was fascinating to me, in regards to what content the students had access to prior to the reading and what was completely new to them. I appreciate the breadth and scope of this guide to illuminate concepts for students who dependent on what part of the world they live in may not have any other context for these ideas. I can't think of a better starting point for a teacher or a classroom in which to explore the environment and its importance and role in children's lives. Many of my own students felt compelled to research further a specific mountain, scientist or animal upon reading this book. It now, has become a reference point in my classroom for kids to look back on, as their science and social justice studies have progressed. I trust this text. It is impeccably researched and in the back there is a comprehensive list of adult/teacher references you can use, including texts like Omnivore's Dilemma. There are corresponding teacher guides accessible for free download via the publisher, Green Sugar Press. I would recommend doing so. There are really no limits to how deeply you can go with this book. The teacher guides help to facilitate this work. Do not miss out on purchasing this text for you classroom! Enjoy exploring...

5.0 out of 5 stars Science Teacher, November 4, 2009
This review is from: An Environmental Guide from A to Z (Hardcover)
As an educator, I often want to tie nature and the environment into my curriculum. I struggle with this something, until I found this wonderful learning tool, An Environmental Guide from A to Z, is a wonderful resource. For example, my students have been learning about states of matter, we read W is also for Water. Then I turned to the AMAZING teachers guide, found on the site [...] and had students answer the following question in their nature book (directions found on the website) Can you name examples of when and where you see water as a gas? As a solid? Through this guide I was apply to teach my curriculum and tie in nature at the same time. The guide is WONDERFUL and a great tool to use as a supplement to the every day curriculum.

Fun, delightful, educational and sends an important message to all. Books are for all ages!

A rare 'green' children's author who genuinely strives to educate thru his books, connect us to nature and being responsible to our planet.

I highly recommend Tim Magner's books, and hope you will enjoy as much as I have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book with a bonus, July 31, 2009
This review is from: An Environmental Guide from A to Z (Hardcover)
Wow, what a timely book. I often read with my 6 year old nephew, Cameron, and this book is wonderful in so many ways. The bonus is what I have learned. When Cameron's little friend got stung by a bee he was angry at God and asked me why God made bee's anyway because they just hurt people. I struggled and then stuttered out a very lame answer. When we read this book together, the answer was there and in a short and simple way that a child (and adult) could understand. Now he is in awe of the bee's wings rather than just afraid of the bee's stinger. And another bonus is that God is still good. This book not only provides easy to understand explanations of nature, more importantly, it stimulates the mind and raises curiosity and respect for all living creatures. He still flinches when he hears buzzing but, bugs no longer just bug him, they fascinate him too. I love this book!
