Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Written by active scientists, this timely book helps readers understand how to think about the environment--not what to think. Incorporates five integrating themes: a global perspective, human population, sustainability, the urban world and values, knowledge and social justice. Each chapter begins with a case study that illustrates the topics discussed. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I purchased this book a few months ago, as a means of self studying for the AP Environmental Science exam. So far, this book has proved to be excellent in successfully learning the material, and emphasizes the everlasting dispute between science and values. I initially wanted to only take this test for some easy college credit; however, Environmental Science has now become a very interesting subject for me thanks to this amazing book. Through great pictures and maps, the reader can more thoroughly comprehend the material. I definately give this book 5 stars, as it is greatly written and has made me far more interested in the subject.

I am using this book for a class in college and it is extremely informative so far (after reading about 6 of the chapters), has many ways to look at the information and issues surrounding it, and also maintains the central theme that is key in environmental science: the relationship between science and values.

I really like it and will be keeping the book instead of selling it off to someone else.

I took a class which used this textbook at the University of California, Santa Barbara, which was co-taught by one of the authors, Ed Keller. This is an introductory book that provides a decent overview of the problems we are currently facing in regard to the environment, what we can do to solve those problems, and other opportunities that our environment can give us.

Four stars for Botkin and others for presenting the knowledge contained in the book BUT only one star for printing another edition. This is a very useful and informative text book that covers a broad spectrum of knowledge for studying environmental sciences. Yet, this text as well as many other new editions of text books that offer the most minor changes in real substance from the prior editions are a sad commentary on profit motive. When there is important new development, the new information can be given to the students by publishing and selling supplements to the prior editions--like most publications of annually changing laws. This would fairly and proportionately compensate the authors for their new work and the publishers for the new supplement. Likely all the students with access to any USED text would buy the supplement instead of doing without the new information. New editions of text books to make USED books obsolete and require students to buy a brand new edition scar the greatness of the authors and defeat the goodness of their publishers. Numerous professors do recognize this and accommodate those students who can only afford USED texts or prior editions--Five Stars to such wise teachers.

This book is better than the newer editions. My professor uses this edition and teaches us everything straight from the book. Easy to comprehend and learn. Cheap and great book!

I bought the book as "like new" but they believed it wasn't up to their standards as "like new" so they sent me an extra 5 dollars to compensate me. I thought it looked perfectly "like new" but I didn't argue ;). Great customer service.
