A marvelous resource for therapists and families,
By
This review is from: Envisioning a Bright Future: Interventions That Work for Children and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (Paperback)
As an Occupational Therapist who has been in practice since the 1980s I am thrilled to have Envisioning a Brighter Future Interventions that Work for Children and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder in my library. When talking with families who are newly diagnosed with ASD I want to give them the most up to date information about what is out there that can help their children. This book has it all from developmental optometry to the latest in biomedical approaches. Chapter 17 is particularly helpful to the parent whose child has been recently diagnosed and is faced with so much information. Patty Lemer prioritizes what types of therapies and environmental modifications families should explore. She even let's people know what they can do before they seek professional advise. Thank you Patty for putting it all together.

Must-read for Parents and Professionals,

This review is from: Envisioning a Bright Future: Interventions That Work for Children and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (Paperback)
On the subject of autism spectrum disorders Envisioning a Bright Future is absolutely the best and only resource you need! Keep it next to you at all times to refer to or use to educate your clients about current non-drug interventions. Patricia Lemer, the brilliant editor, actually coined the phrase "autism spectrum." She knows this territory like no one else. Lemer and her contributing experts present their material with precision that professionals will respect and clarity for which parents and relatives will be grateful. Learn about effective treatments based on nutrition, detoxification, sensory integration, motor development, visual and auditory processing, social-emotional adjustment, subtle energy and more. The knowledge available here is encyclopedic in scope and depth.
As a Brain Gym consultant, a Masgutova Neuro-sensory-motor Reflex Integration Specialist, and a Family Constellations facilitator, I am thrilled to see information about these remarkable resources in reader- and user-friendly form. Lemer's book is the only place I know of where you can find a thorough presentation of Dietrich Klinghardt's protocol and his explanation of the relevance of Family Constellations to autism. Those who want to be fully informed about the history of and treatment options for today's autism epidemic will read the book from cover to cover. Other's will find an exceptionally thorough index to lead them to the exact information they need. Don't miss the editor's overview and her chapters on total load theory and prioritizing interventions. This wonderful book is a must-have for every conscientious professional and every concerned parent. Mary Rentschler, M.Ed., [...]

Envisioning a Bright Future,
This review is from: Envisioning a Bright Future: Interventions That Work for Children and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (Paperback)
After 15 years of living with autism, I can honestly say that the most valuable tool for any parent is to be able to have a complete and comprehensive explanation of where to begin and how to move forward. Patty has really "envisioned a bright future" for our children and adults on the autism spectrum by meticulously outlining her "Total Load Theory". She presents realistic solutions with incredible tidbits of information so that parents can have a much greater understanding and awareness of their child's issues and develop an effective strategy plan that benefits the child. Patty provides information on the various sensory, biomedical, and educational approaches that are the successful stepping-stones to helping your child put the pieces of puzzle back together again. No stone is left unturned and no child needs to be left behind! A must read for every parent out there....thank you Patty for all your hard work, diligence and 40 years of incredible experience! We love you!! Marco and Teresa Badillo.

'This book is the best resource I have found to address autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Wonderfully edited by Patricia S. Lemer, MEd, NCC, the various authors of each chapter provide numerous practical solutions to help children and adults having ASD along with information useful to a better understanding of ASD. My child has tried several of the suggested solutions with success (ie, vision therapy, neurofeedback, and sensory integration therapy). Many of the other approaches discussed were new to me such as the Allergy Elimination Diet and the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, the latter of which my family is about to implement in the form of the GAPS diet. "Each therapy or intervention that alleviates a risk factor lessons the load [on the individual], freeing up the body's energy for physiological, cognitive, sensory, language, and social-emotional development to take place", as noted in Chapter 5 "A Biomedical Approach to ASD" co-authored by Ms. Lemer and Kelly Dorfman, MS. I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to rid themselves or a loved one of ASD.

indispensable and thorough,
This review is from: Envisioning a Bright Future: Interventions That Work for Children and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (Paperback)
I am a Creative Arts Therapist who has been working since 2002 with children on the autism spectrum. I have discovered that there are many resources, many therapies, and many philosophies out there about how to think about autism, how to treat autism, how to cope with the diagnosis. A parent, a teacher, a clinician can be overwhelmed. Patty Lemer, as editor, has created a book that brings together with intelligent organization and selectivity not only invaluable information, but also a range of authors and authorities, a range of approaches, a breadth of entry points for therapy. Her book expands one's mind and feelings about what is possible and how to think outside of the box. The book is an education in autism and can be read from cover to cover. It can also be an invaluable reference book when a particular issue arises that needs attention; as such, this book has a superb index. Additionally, each chapter has a list of references at the end of it, should one wish to investigate the topic further. This book can be both a starting point for a newcomer, and an eye-opener for a seasoned practitioner. I recommend this book unequivocally for anyone interested in working with populations on the autism spectrum.
