5.0 out of 5 stars Our "Puppy" Loves Them
Our "puppy" (90lb Rhodesian Ridgeback) has been using these daily for a couple of months. I originally purchased them through our vet but found the price to be better on Amazon. Our puppy loves them and knows that she gets a new one everyday so she will wait by the pantry door after dinner for hers. We will see at our next vet visit if it is improving her dental...

2.0 out of 5 stars Regardless of the coating - this is still RAWHIDE, October 23, 2009
This review is from: C.E.T. Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews, Extra-Large Dogs, 15 Chews (Misc.)
I purchased based on reviews here and elsewhere about all the wonderful things these chews accomplished on dogs teeth and the price per unit was so much less than the "Greenies" I have been using. Upon receipt I immediately noticed that these are just large rawhide strips with a coating on them. They are not even particularly thick rawhide. Rawhide in any form is very dangerous and you must monitor your dog very closely when they are chewing on these. My Great Dane is not a "swallow whole" kind of eater - he tries to chew up even the tiniest training treats before swallowing them, BUT with rawhide strips like these he will chew on the whole piece until it eventually becomes soft, then swallow it. Whole. Then choke it back up, chew some more and swallow it whole again. Repeat until it goes down and stays down. This is not healthy and not very safe and I always have to be poised to remove the offending chunk of soft wet rawhide from his throat as he gags it up. He does love these chews but I have not seen any wonderful changes in his teeth so far with 2 weeks of daily use so it will not be worth the trouble or risk of choking for me to buy more once this bag is gone. I now wish I had gotten the smaller quantity bag so I could be done with these sooner!
Edited to add that I finally finished the whole bag and still didnt see any big changes to his teeth or gums. Also, the coating comes off on his white legs and my carpet and they make his breath smell weird (not fresh, kind of medicine like). I will never buy these again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vet recommended -- dog approved: Great for dental health like potato chips for dogs., February 14, 2010
This review is from: C.E.T. Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews, Extra-Large Dogs, 15 Chews (Misc.)
My vet recommended these to me and sells them in her office because they are great at helping to keep your dog's teeth clean. They are American made so the ingredients that go into the rawhide are regulated and will not harm your dog. (this goes for any rawhide chew -- make sure you always check to see if it is made in the USA since products from other countries can be treated with arsenic-based preservatives, bleach, and other chemicals not intended for consumption by any animal!)

I have not had any problems with my dogs trying to swallow them whole or choking on them. My vet does say they shouldn't be given more than once every few days.

As a previous reviewer has noted, you should probably supervise your dog (especially the first few times you give these) to make sure they don't try to swallow whole. Also, get the size appropriate for your dog -- if you have large dogs, get them the larger chews so that swallowing whole is not possible and it makes them chew more.

I've had other dogs where I have not given them dental chews and we always had problems with their teeth needing to be cleaned and gum problems. That resulted in having to get them cleaned by my vet which resulted in general sedation -- much more dangerous (not to mention expensive) than rawhide or chew toys. So believe me, these are worth it in the long run -- even though my dogs are all between 3 and 4 years old, they all have perfect clean teeth. At least that is one less thing to worry about!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vet and Mastiff approved, May 9, 2006

Our vet recommended these chews and Henry, our mastiff, loves them. The vet said dogs like them, they are good for the dog, and they are a good substitue for pig ears which the vet said were a big "no, no."
Nice to find them here for about half of what our vet was charging us.

I think the descriptions of products should have where they are made. If I had known these dog chews were made in Mexico, I would not have bought them.

My dogs love them (no choking problems). They do clean their teeth and they are less expensive online then buying them at the vet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dog chews for clean teeth, September 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: C.E.T. Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews, Extra-Large Dogs, 15 Chews (Misc.)
Our vet recommended these enzymatic chews for our dogs teeth. We have two poodles who are very dainty when they eat and don't gobble things up like it's their last meal so we don't worry much about them choking on these. They chew and chew them until soft and then swallow tiny bits. I don't know how they do for the teeth because I use special plaque remover in their water and have a spray for their teeth. We use everything possible to keep plaque from their teeth and it all does a good job but we don't know which one does the best job, probably all of them together. We're just glad that what we do use keeps the plaque away, even in the very back teeth.
