I have GERD, or more accurately, esophagitis due to a damaged esophageal sphincter. My GI doctor originally prescribed the usual acid blockers, but there were problems. The acid blockers didn't really help, as I didn't have a high acid problem, just a damaged sphincter. Plus, research I did on my own confirmed that low stomach acid levels hinder proper digestion. The biggest problem, however, was stopping the acid blockers. It always caused a rebound effect: true acid reflux for days or even weeks after stopping the pills. My solution: DGL. A nutrition doctor that my wife used recommended to her that I try them. I did and they worked great. They greatly eased the esophageal discomfort, yet did not suppress stomach acid, hence no rebound if I should miss a dose.

A follow-up visit to my GI doc a year later found marked improvement in the state of the damaged sphincter. He assumed that the prescription acid blockers were responsible and was surprised when I told him that I had switched to a DGL formula within 90 days of trying the acid blockers he prescribed. To his credit, he told me to continue with whatever I was doing since it certainly was working. I've been taking Enzymatic Therapy DGL for nearly a decade now, with regular follow-up visits to my gastroenterologist.

There are many brands and varieties of DGL available. I have tried a good number of them and found that I personally prefer the Enzymatic Therapy fructose free chewable tablets. I like licorice a lot, so the flavor was no problem. I prefer the fructose free variety as I don't like "sweets" and the sweeter taste of the "regular" variety didn't appeal to me. My younger daughter, however, hated the fructose free taste and opted for the chocolate flavored ones when she had a temporary bout of GERD some years ago.

FOR GASTRIC COMPLAINTS THIS IS THE TICKET

CONSIDER DGL FORM [WITHOUT Glycyrrhizin]:

If you are looking solely for relief from peptic ulcer symptoms and/or G.E.R.D., use DGL Licorice only, as it is safer and concentrates the factors that alleviate gastric symptoms such as indigestion and heartburn. Also in wafer form it is more effective as it combines with saliva to react positively in the gastric tract. [DGL Wafers]

DGL VS. CIMETIDINE:

Studies have shown that in comparison to "Cimetidine", the DGL wafers worked slower but effected more of a healing action against peptic ulcers. They used 1 DGL wafer before each meal in the clinical trials.

What is Glycyrrhizin?

It is what makes Licorice incredibly beneficial and potentially dangerous. In a nutshell, it can aggravate hypertension and edema. If you are looking for gastric tract relief, forget about Glycyrrhizin.

ABOUT BRANDS:

I have used "Now", "Swanson" and "Nature's Way" with roughly equal results. They all work, but the Swanson brand [when available - sometimes sold-out] usually costs less. I have used "Enzymatic Therapy" DGL and have used several of their other products as well. They are excellent, but usually cost a little more. I noticed that this product does come with a free shipping offer which makes it very attractive since this is an excellent choice of DGL Licorice.

First of all, if you do not like licorice, you will not be fond of this product.
Also, if you are adverse to eating fructose, you will also not be fond of this product.
That being said, this product WORKS. I have a hiatal hernia, reflux and occasional IBS and I can honestly say that DGL has been a godsend for me. I have been taking it for several years. And now, I only need Prevacid on occasion when I used to take it daily.
If you have digestive difficulties, it's certainly worth giving this product a try!

Hi, I've suffered gastritis for last 3 years and until now nothing had worked well for me, not even the most strict diets. Recently I finally found out that keeping a healthy diet (basically eating no sugars and/or fatty meals) in combination with DGL has eliminated 100% my gastritis symtoms.

Update, Nov 16, 2014. I just noticed this review is about the one that is fructose-free, which I prefer and doesn't seem to be what's offered on this page, so keep that in mind when you read it.

This is a NEW UPDATE (April 2014 - older, unhappy review was 2012). I recently purchased this from a health food store because other brands just weren't as effective, and I was hoping perhaps this formula got fixed. It doesn't seem to have the strong licorice taste anymore! It seems they've fixed it somewhat since 2 years ago. It's not so sharp and glaringly licorice and does not aggravate my issues. I'm very glad because this brand really works well, so give it a try -- you can always return it, most local health food/vitamin stores are good about that.

This is an NEW UPDATE (Oct. 2012) to my OLD review posted in 2011.

I used to LOVE this product, and recommended it to many, many people. NOT ANY MORE. Enzymatic Therapy has changed the formula. You now have to LOVE licorice to deal with it, as it's got a very strong licorice flavor. Their customer service says the reason is due to some ingredients no longer being available. I feel this could be BS, because comparing the ingredients list on the old bottle and the new bottle, the ingredients are the same except for these changes:

1. They've ADDED anise seed powder and it's listed as the 3rd ingredient
2. They've ADDED MORE natural anise seed flavor, as it is now the 5th ingredient instead of the last ingredient.

So, if you love licorice, you'll be a happy camper. I do not, and find that the sharp, somewhat minty flavor is actually irritating to my esophagus. Enzymatic Therapy doesn't seem to care. The CS I spoke with today was very nonplus, and rather rude.
