Not really an iron pill but usually better than an iron pill., November 1, 2011
This review is from: Enzymatic Therapy Energizing Iron with Eleuthero, 90 Softgels (Health and Beauty)
I also have used this product for decades. In fact this was the most important product to make Enzymatic Therapy famous from its early years, in my opinion. But it used to be called "Liquid Liver" which is what it really is. I will try to sort out the confusion.
1. Probable reasons for the name change. Energizing Iron aka Liquid Liver really is the best quality predigested liver pill and to my knowledge delivers far more iron than any other liver pill. Women and men both need iron and this really is the best way to get iron. Take this regularly and you may never need an iron pill and that is the way it should be done. Each pill only delivers 0.6 mg. iron but it is totally natural and probably much better absorbed. This is explained on the Enzymatic Therapy website.
2. Why I disagree with the name change. Two reasons...
a) Because liver pills SHOULD PERHAPS be taken by many people who are allergic to iron pills! Please consult with your doctor, but please be sure your doctor understands: TAKING THIS PILL IS NUTRITIONALLY NO DIFFERENT FROM EATING A BIT OF LIVER DAILY. Enzymatic Therapy has always been excellent with its product quality and clumsy with its names. "Liquid Liver" was not a very appetizing name and was a bit confusing. This is not a free-flowing liquid, it's a softgel capsule. But "Energizing Iron" is much worse! Why? Because many people are allergic to typical iron pills or experience constipation. Many are even told by their doctor not to take iron pills or even a multivitimin with iron! So they and their doctor probably are going to "play safe" and avoid this pill even though it may be the pill they most need to take! Because this may be the one way that they CAN safely get iron, year in and year out!
b) Because liver pills ARE NOT PERHAPS the serious iron pills temporarily needed by people with serious iron deficiency! There are high-dose iron pills that have less side effects than most iron pills.
Albion Chelated Iron Bisglycinate for example, is labeled not to cause constipation, last I looked. Enzymatic Therapy also makes a relatively safe high-dose
Ultimate Iron. I.e., "Liquid Liver" is the best, most natural way to ensure a steady normal dose of iron over the years. But this might not be the one to take if you have a serious immediate iron deficiency.
3. For people who do not eat liver regularly, Liquid Liver is one of the most important supplements. (Ironically especially for non-strict vegetarians, liver provides the best source of nutrients most lacking in vegetarian diets.) Liver is by far the best natural source of B vitamins, especially B-12 which is often poorly absorbed. I.e., if you agree that vitamin pills are good for people, just as fertilizer is good for plants, then you are depending on synthetic sources of B vitamin supplementation. And no other liver pill measures up to this one in potency or in digestibility.
4. Liquid Liver is also a small but concentrated and digestible source of high quality protein. Protein is like money: a crude necessity that does not of itself create health or happiness, but often diverts energy away from the refinements that do. Of course, there are other excellent protein supplements: canned or well-cooked kidney beans, black beans, lentils,
Organic Whey Protein, casein protein, Chinese egg drop soup. But variety is important. (Except I avoid soy-based proteins, which are very indigestible, allergy-causing and to be avoided in my opinion. Tofu and tempe are only good fried, and fried foods are not very healthy, in my opinion. Also most "vegan" bean or rice protein powders: yuck.)
5. Liver provides what I call "prefabricated liver repair molecules." The liver is by far the largest internal organ, essential for digestion, detoxification and the immune system. The liver is also by far the most resilient internal organ but does often have problems and when it does you are in for a world of trouble. Eating liver ensures an abundance of molecular compounds similar to your own liver, therefore in theory at least, helping to minimize the effort of the body to maintain the liver. Similar to the fact that buying a prefabricated window or door minimizes the carpenter's effort at replacing those structural components, as compared to custom building from scratch. (Not a well-accepted fact, but just my personal opinion, so take this as you will.)
6. One caveat: the Liquid Liver pill is slightly large. The pill is torpedo-shaped so most people can swallow it readily. But people who have problems with pills may want to chew the capsule a bit. Yes it tastes like liver but any smaller liver pills are not nearly as good quality.
