My wife's board-certified neurologist recommended Petadolex brand butterbur for her migraines. She has a bad reaction to sulfa drugs and other expensive drugs are not covered by our insurance. Butterbur is regulated as a pharmaceutical in other countries, but not the U.S. The most important thing about butterbur is that in its natural state, it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA's), which can cause liver cancer. Unlike some "natural" varieties of butterbur, PA's have been removed from Petadolex. Although it can be used at the onset of migraines, it is primarily used to prevent them and is not fully effective until used for up to two months. (We have not completed our full course of treatment yet, so I cannot speak to results in our specific case) If you find yourself turning to butterbur for migraines or other conditions, be smart and get a quality brand like Petadolex because not all butterbur is created equal.

Update #1: my wife now complains of a "grassy" taste from belching after taking butterbur. I apologize if you did not want to know that!

Update #2: Well over two months later, my wife is seeing gradual and subtle signs of improvement. The doctor is weaning her off of stronger pharmaceuticals to reduce interactions. There are a lot of moving parts at work here, but the butterbur appears to take the "edge" off enough that she can survive her "days off".

I was very hopeful to have a way to prevent migraines since I can't take NSAIDs (they irritate my stomach). I know the manufacturer's website says that there are no side effects, but there were for me. I felt fine before taking it, but within minutes, my stomach started cramping and then I kept burping. I tried to drink a lot of water to hopefully dilute the effect. The cramping continued later in my intestines and I didn't feel right for the rest of the day. To be fair, I have multiple food allergies and sensitivities so I'm not surprised. The purpose of my post is to let people know that side effects are possible.

I have had migraines for 40 years. Been to every Dr. in every field and all I got was more drugs. I had gotten down to 2 or 3 migraines a month. My friend found these after much research and gave me 4 bottles for my birthday. That was in July, it is now almost Nov. and I have not had 1 single migraine!! I have stopped taking two of the medications I have been on for years, and also do not have to get botox injections. I am so completely amazed and pain free for the first time since I was 20! Yes, I would recommend this to anyone with migraines.

I have had migraines almost daily since I was 9 years old, I'm now 45. After having tried just about every prescription med out there, my neurologist suggested I try Petadolex. I have been taking 2 pills a day since last April. Now, I only get about 1 migraine a month, and the severity of that migraine is very manageable. I'd recommend Petadolex to anyone who suffers from migraines!

I've been taking Enzymatic Therapy Petadolex butterbur root extract for over five years upon the recommendation of my neurologist to help treat my chronic migraines. He had attended a conference where a German neurological team had presented the results of a study they had done using butterbur for treating migraines in youth. He was impressed enough with the study to try the treatment with some of his patients.

The butterbur cut my migraines by 1/2, at least for the first few years and the only side effect that I noticed was belching and that got better as time went on.

This particular brand was specifically recommended because it uses an extraction method that guarantees that it is free from harmful levels of potentially dangerous compounds known as pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which can cause liver damage. Be sure to check out any brand that you use and make sure the PA's are removed.

Be sure to check with your doctor before using this for dosage, etc. but it really did help me.

I began taking this about 2 months ago due to chronic headaches and migraines. I saw results within the first few weeks. I made the mistake of not ordering another supply, and I've been miserable all week! I definitely reccomend this product!

There is excellent evidence that this particular brand of this particular herb is effective for a certain percentage of the population suffering from migraine headaches -- there are even double-blind studies strongly suggesting it's effectiveness.

HOWEVER, the German equivalent of the FDA has now banned it's use there because the company that manufactures the patented Petadolex product, which was known for safety and purity, changed their manufacturing process to one that was not felt to be safe by the German authorities.

Natural Butterbur has compounds that can cause liver damage and may cause cancer. The old Petadolex manufacturing process, which was regulated by the German government, was felt to remove these compounds and produce a safe product. That is no longer the case.

Petadolex products now in circulation here in the US DOES NOT meet the stringent safety guidelines as advertised and medical professionals from both the standard and alternative health industries are advising against using the product.

HOWEVER, the producing company with the patent, Weber & Weber, has stated in letters sent to inquiring customers that they are now using a safer method of extracting the toxic compounds (CO2 gas process instead of a chemical solvent process) and that the German government has not studied this and that is the reason why the Petadolex product has been banned there.

The problem is that there is now NO real third-party oversight or regulation of this product AS CLAIMED in advertisements and you are taking the same risk with this product that you would take with most other supplements, none of which are regulated in the US.

Too bad for consumers and migraine sufferers everywhere!
