My wife read the 1st edition in Japanese a couple of months ago and has been very taken with the arguments that Dr. Shinya made. I received my English version this week and I have been unable to put the book down. Dr. Shinya has a unique perspective from which to base his arguments and while I admit that he supports a theory that has not been accepted in the US medical community, it has clearly not been disproved either. Furthermore, he makes rational and concise points to support his theory and back it up with an overwhelming display of research and evidence. He is certainly one of the few MD's in the US that focuses on treating the cause of medical problem rather than treating the symptoms. I urge anyone who has "lifestyle" diseases. Crohns, Heart Disease, Hypertension, Cancer , Diabetes, or any other imbalance for that matter to read this book, then read it again. This book applies to everyone sick or healthy and it does an excellent job of explaining how to stay healthy for a long long time. Treat the disease, not the symptoms. There is no "miracle" cure here, but rather a deep understanding of health and sickness. An understadning that allows people to thrive.

Interesting,

This review is from: The Enzyme Factor (Hardcover)
As an author of two books on this topic ("Everything You Need to Know about Enzymes" and "Enzymes: What the Experts Know") I bought this book not knowing much about the author but a lot about the topic.
Everything You Need to Know About Enzymes: A Simple Guide to Using Enzymes to Treat Everything from Digestive Problems and Allergies to Migraines and Arthritis Enzymes: What the Experts Know I found the information to be accurate and quite interesting. I was especially intrigued by the author's comments on what he calls "source enzymes". This theory was new to me but I found it fascinating. I also thought his balanced approach on diet, water intake and microflora were accurate and will give the reader something to think about.

The Enzyme Factor,

This review is from: The Enzyme Factor (Hardcover)
Dr. Shinya's book "The Enzyme Factor" has made an astounding impact on my husband whose been taking pharmaceutical Nexium & Prilosec for 15 years to treat IBS. Although the drugs kept the reflux in check, he suffered many side effects including constant headaches, fatigue, and excessive weight gain. No matter what diet we tried, his weight remained the same or climbed. A month ago, we went to see a reliable herbalist whose suggestion was to stop taking the Rx treatment immediately and try a whole vinegar and water tonic for reflux. In addition, she suggested a regiment of herbs to cleanse the digestive tract and restore a balance. This information was a reiteration of Dr. Shinya's eating philosophy. Although we have been living it for a short 3 weeks, I can report 100% success at being completely Rx free. In addition, my husband weight began to drop within days. To date, he has shed 18 lbs. I can tell you after years of diets, this is truly a miracle. This weight is the sludge that his body has collected due to the drug induced imbalance of his digestive system. The headaches are gone, and his stamina has returned. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to be healthy or wants to stay healthy for a lifetime. Since America's food resources are compromised unless you buy organic or home-grow, supplements are also essential. Go to a health food store to get something your body can breakdown and absorb. As Dr. Shinya says, most doctors respond to sickness. They don't prevent it. Your body can be healthy if you provide it with the right tools. Knowledge, good food and clean water are essential. Your body will do the rest.

A great book to learn how to live longer.,
By Antoine (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Enzyme Factor (Hardcover)
Although the Arthur, Dr. Shinya's other books are also well known in Japan, I had never paid attention to him before because I was young and didn't worried about my health. Now I'm in my 40's and even-though I have never really been sick myself yet, people around myself getting sick as you get older and made me think about my family and my-own health more seriously, so I read this book when my friend who is into "Go green" and organic products etc. recommended it. What Dr. Shinya tells you to eat might be too hard to follow for most American people, but he is a well respected MD in New York City, and he is not telling you to eat or take suspicious food or pills like you've seen. His diet is a sort of like Macrobiotic (No dairies, No animal proteins etc.). This book convinced me to give up most of the food I love and not only I've lost my weight, also I'm happier and getting more energy to do around the house and more patient with my 5 year old daughter. My biggest problem right now is to cook vegetarian meals that all of my family can enjoy. I want everybody I know to have a healthy, happy long lives, so I sent this book to all of my family and close friends as a valentine gift and they all enjoyed this book! Enjoy! (It's easy to read too)

Powerful new ideas,
This review is from: The Enzyme Factor (Hardcover)
Interesting new ideas about the relationship of diet to health. The fact that what we eat can be determined by looking at the colon was amazing to me. Dr. Shinya has over forty years of experience examining both healthy and ill patients. He warns that most pharmaceuticals are damaging to the body and should be used only on a short term basis. Definitely a book to own and to follow.

Excellent book about diet,

This review is from: The Enzyme Factor (Paperback)
I got this book expecting to gain a deep understanding of enzymes so I could judge whether I'm getting enough and whether I should be taking supplements or changing my eating behavior. What I found is that Dr. Shinya is most definitely an authority on colons and did a perfect job in convincing me that the health of my colon will determine my over health, and that the diet he recommends will insure good colon health. There is a lot of fine information here and it gave me a new perspective on what I should and should not be eating. But while Dr. Shinya often mentions how important enzymes are, I came away from it feeling like I learned little about them. He does say that fresh fruit and veggies are a great source, and that enzymes are key to life, but I wanted more, deeper information. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in nutrition or trying to overcome a condition that could be digestion related, but if you want to learn about enzymes, keep looking.
If you need to be motivated to learn about your colon and how to make it happy, watch a video of some colons taken by Dr. Shinya: [...]

The ULTIMATE healthy diet,
By Karen Fang "Aucuneidee" (Hong Kong SAR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Enzyme Factor (Hardcover)
You should take Dr. Shinya's advice because:
(From the back flap of the Chinese edition:) Dr. Shinya: - Has never been sick for 45 years -- ever since he recovered from the flu when he was 19. - ALL of his cancer patients have 0% recurrence rate. - Throughout 45 years of his medical career, he has NEVER issued a death certificate - Invented the use of a colonoscope to remove polyps from the colon without abdominal incisions I have read the Chinese version of this book along with four other books that he wrote. Dr. Shinya gives a very detailed explanation of the "Shinya Diet", which composes of 50% whole grains, 30% vegetables and fruits, 5% soy products, and 15% animal products (mainly fish). He also insists on the importance of quality water, which can efficiently activate our enzymes, raise our metabolisms, and clease our bodies. Of all the "health" theories

Your Colon: No Kooky Colon Cleanses - Dr. Shiya's Simple Way,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Enzyme Factor (Hardcover)
Dr. Shinya's experience as a pioneering endoscopist and colonoscopist is LIFE-SAVING. He has given us a glimpse (literally) of the colon and how our daily diet and fluids passing through the colon make us well or make us sick. The small bowel and the colon are the highway for nutrient or toxic absorbtion to the rest of the body. He and his team have done over 370,000 endoscopic/coloscopic procedures and you can bet he has learned much about human health shedding light where "the sun don't shine". His statement that "...disease starts in the colon" was a big revelation to me and he tells us why. This is an invaluable read and I highly recommend it. You can also do a search for video clips by him on You Tube. BTW: I saw/heard Dr. Shinya play the Star-Spangled Banner on a harmonica.... he's quite a guy! C.S., 11/21/09.

This Information Could Save Your Life!!,
This review is from: The Enzyme Factor (Hardcover)
Dr. Shinya changed the world with the Shinya Technique for removing polyps through an endoscopy instead of invasive major abdominal surgery. He is Japan's most famous Doctor. His practice in the United States also includes celebrities and Presidents. Dr. Shinya is Clinical Professor of Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Chief of the Endoscopy Unit of Beth Israel Hospital in New York as well as an advisor for Maeda Hospital and Hanzomon Gastrointestinal Clinic in Japan. This book gives a detailed account of what to take into our bodies in order to get rid of the TOXINS which cause sickness and disease in our bodies. Our intake should not just be "You are what you eat". But also "You are what you drink." I know people personally that their lives have been saved as a result of reading and applying the information in this book.
