Well-written practical guide to using digestive enzymes,
By A Customer
This review is from: Enzymes for Digestive Health and Nutritional Wealth: The Practical Guide for Digestive Enzymes (Paperback)
Wonderful account of using digestive enzymes to help the authors family with PDD-NOS and Asberger's, sensory integration disorder, encopresis, IBS, and chronic migranes. It also includes many accounts of other families successfully using digestive enzymes for treating digestive disorders, autism related conditions, and information on relief for arthritis, cancer and other conditions. Wonder how all these conditions are related? Wonder how digestive enzymes could possibly help? Read the book. There is an amazing amount of research on the topic. Chapter three has to be the most interesting and understandable description of the human digestive system and related disorders ever written. I started using the digestive enzymes after reading the book and finally have relief from a life-long battle with irritable bowel syndrome. Plus my arthritic joints are not as sore. Amazing, but logical after you read this book.

About ten years ago, I read Enzyme Nutrition by Dr. Edward Howell, and found it to be interesting and informative. Unfortunately, much of the research and information was outdated, so I sought other enzyme related books. It took ten years before I found a book I could recommend, and this is it. Unlike nearly all of the other enzyme books out there, in which the authors promote a particular product or manufacturer that they have a vested interest in, Ms. Defelice gives a very refreshing unbiased approach to the subject of enzymes. Although she refers to one particular enzyme product in the book, this is likely because at the time of publication, it was the only product available capable of giving the results she described (in great detail). On her website, www.enzymestuff.com, she lists several other enzyme products that have since been found to be useful.
The author writes in a very friendly, easy to understand style...her detailed description of the human digestive system and its processes is one of the clearest I've ever read. She gives a sense of being an educated scientist, investigator, and concerned mother all in one. If you or anyone you know has digestive problems, autism, autoimmune disorders, etc. then please read this book. And if you simply want to better understand enzymes and their use in human health, this is by far the best book on the subject!

Welcome and highly recommended reading,

This review is from: Enzymes for Digestive Health and Nutritional Wealth: The Practical Guide for Digestive Enzymes (Paperback)
Digestive enzymes are essential for human and animal life. Digestive enzyme therapy is an important and newly emerging alternative approach to a number of human ailments including autism and such neurological conditions as PDD, sensory integration dysfunction, migraines, ADD, ADHD, food and chemical intolerance, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, autoimmune conditions, bowel dysfunctions, and "leaky gut" syndrome. Author Karen L. DeFelice recounts the compelling and informative story of a group of families that found health improvements through digestive enzyme technology to be incredibly successful. But why? Enzymes For Digestive Health And Nutritional Wealth reveals fascinating answers to that question while also documenting how a diverse array of seemingly unrelated biological issues commonly associated with these poorly understood neurological conditions are addressed one by one with enzymes. There are wealth of scientific studies showing how the observed improvements within these families are document in medical studies. Enzymes For Digestive Health And Nutritional Wealth is welcome and highly recommended reading for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in autism, digestive, and related neurological conditions, as well as an important addition to academic community library Health/Medicine reference collections.

This review is from: Enzymes for Digestive Health and Nutritional Wealth: The Practical Guide for Digestive Enzymes (Paperback)
The preface of this book talks about it being information about enzymes for all ages when in fact it discusses mainly issues having to deal with children with autism or autism spectrum disorders. It is not written in a consise manner and information is hard to pull from all of the anecdotes and parental, mostly motherly, comments. I would not recommend it to adults seeking digestive and enzyme information.

The owner of a Natural Food Store offered me this reading when I was searching for alternative therapies for my migraines and my son's ADHD and BOTH of our stomach issues. Well, throughout the reading, I couldn't believe how common our problems were and how the author was writing what seemed like the exact problems, me and my son were going through. Since then, I have purchased some enzymes and we're waiting to see if we get the same results. Either way, I have gained A LOT of insight from this book, and as a nurse, I am astonished how our problems were related and originating from a lack of digestive enzymes. Highly recommended read!

I was very impressed with the information in this book. It's useful for anyone seeking insight into the role of digestion in immune system and metabolic problems. It's well written--I stayed up reading it in bed, which doesn't happen with many reference books.
As several people commented, the overview of the digestive system is great. I found it very readable and helpful. I was happily surprised to find that that the book has a strong level of scientific research referenced as well--one of the best qualities of the book is that it's told as a story and also provides this background for further research. You can also find good information to help choose and buy enzymes in one of the appendices. For example, I've always been confused by the different units used to measure enzymes; the author explains the standards used for measurements there. While the book is targeted toward families dealing with autism and developmental disorders, unlike one of the earlier reviewers, I did find it quite useful for understanding my own immune system problems. These include allergies and chemical sensitivities that have mostly manifested on the neurological level with confusion, memory issues, distorted perceptions, and even momentary blackouts (though also as problems with migraines, asthma, and irritable bowel syndrome). I've used enzymes before, sometimes casually as a digestive aid and they've been helpful for that, and they also helped me recover from IBS, but this book has given me tools and insight to focus on working more effectively and on a deeper level with them. I think the book has especially hopeful information for many people, because neurological symptoms can be so invisible to others and so discouraging to try to work with. I'm happy to have found this book and I'm plan to look at her more recent book next and investigate her website. |
