Book Description

May 2, 2007 7 and up2 and upEoin Colfer's Legend Of...
Growing up with four complainers for brothers, Will Woodman has a hard time getting an audience for his own troubles. He has to wait in line to gripe to his mom--and that leaves his dad. But since his dad is so busy, Will has to defer to his older (and faster) brother Marty. Will decides that what he really needs is his own grown-up to complain to.  And he has the perfect guy for the job--someone who's a good listenener and has a lot of free time: Grandad.

But swapping sob stories with Grandad doesn't prove to be as satisfying as Will thought. Grandad has tons of pathetic stories to choose from, and one is worse than the next! But when Will hears the legend of the worst boy in the world, he knows he has finally hit the jackpot....

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–4—With four other complaining sons, Will Woodman's parents don't have time to listen when he needs to vent. Frustrated, he hopes that his Grandad will become his confidant. When he spends Saturdays working with the old man, who is the lighthouse keeper in a seaside village, the two strike a deal to listen to each other's "sob stories." Grandad, though, has a penchant for "one-upping." Poor Will can't seem to top any of his unbelievable stories, which involve shark bites on the head, badgers stealing schoolbags, and a bad run-in with tinfoil. Finally catching some time alone with his dad, Will learns a remarkable and amusing story about himself that he's sure can't be topped. In the end, Grandad helps Will to make a significant discovery about himself and his problems, making this a satisfying, funny, and engaging addition to the series. Quirky cartoon illustrations add to the fun, creating a perfect selection for reluctant readers. Fans of Wendelin Van Draanen's "Shredderman" (Yearling), Dave Keane's "Joe Sherlock" (HarperCollins), and Dav Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" (Scholastic) series will enjoy this book.—Jennifer Cogan, Bucks County Free Library, Doylestown, PA

Eoin Colfer (pronounced Owen) is the New York Times best-selling author
of the blockbuster Artemis Fowl series as well as Airman; Half Moon
Investigations; The Supernaturalist; Eoin Colfer's Legend of... books;
The Wish List; Benny and Omar; and Benny and Babe. He was born in
Wexford on the southeast coast of Ireland in 1965, where he and his four
brothers were brought up by his father (an elementary school teacher,
historian and artist of note) and mother (a drama teacher). He first
developed an interest in writing in primary (elementary) school with
gripping Viking stories inspired by history that he was learning in
school at the time.

Eoin got his degree from Dublin University and qualified as a primary
school teacher, returning to work in Wexford. He married in 1991 and he
and his wife spent about 4 years between 1992 and 1996 working in Saudi
Arabia, Tunisia and Italy. His first book, Benny and Omar, was published
in 1998, based on his experiences in Tunisia; it has since been
translated into many languages; a sequel followed in 1999. In 2001, the
first Artemis Fowl book was published worldwide to much success -
shortly thereafter he left teaching to concentrate fully on his writing.
To this day, Eoin has written 6 Artemis Fowl books which have sold over

A Kid's Review
It is such an awesome book! It is written by a great author. I love all his books. Artemis Fowl and The Supernaturalist are some of my favorites. the Worst Boy is a funny story and is a good story because it has some funny things like bunny P.J's and wanting revenge over a gummy.

My 10 year old daughter was very enthusiastic about it, and read it without prompting. She said she enjoyed it and would read it again, soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars So funny and engaging for kids and adults!, April 15, 2011

This review is from: Eoin Colfer's Legend of the Worst Boy in the World (Hardcover)
This book has my students and I rolling on the floor laughing every time I read it. I am an elementary school librarian in New Hampshire and I read this aloud to all of my 2nd grade classes around this time of year. It take us two or three weeks to get through since I only see them once a week, but they HATE leaving the library when I'm in the middle of it....especially when we get to the part where Will and Marty start their "walking the line" adventure. There are parts of it I can barely read because I'm laughing so hard. I SO hope Mr. Colfer plans to write another one of these "Legend of..." stories!
