The rhythm of this short story by Michelle Miles flows effortlessly, transporting the reader to another place and time. The dying Meira reflects on her love for Eorwulf in full-of-life, almost Emily Dickinson-style prose.
Meira's final act in life is to explain to her mother how she met the handsome and mysterious Eorwulf, and since her disease has left her mute, she must reveal in her last written words how it is he may help her move onto a new world -- an afterlife where she's healthy and beautiful and able to love him freely.
For such a short story, Eorwulf packs a lot of emotion, and although it ends with Meira's death, the reader is left with a happy ending as she at last has what she wanted...to be with the strong, protective Eorwulf forever. A beautiful story, elegantly told.
