Biography

The heart of the Kinks beats hardest in brothers Ray Davies and Dave Davies, founder members and creative drivers. They formed the band in 1963 with Peter Quaife and Mick Avory and it took only three single releases until they released the seminal “You Really Got Me”: a noisy, rousing anthem for a generation. Their fourth single “All Day and All of the Night”, proved that this band were a keeper.… Read more in Amazon's The Kinks Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Classics, Classics, Classics, November 27, 1999

Well, here they are in all their glory! These ten EP's contain the classic hits and lot's more. Heavy metal was created with the opening chords of You Really Got Me and popular music hasn't been the same since. These tunes blasted out of AM radio's everywhere between 1964-1968. All the good stuff is here; David Watts, Sunny Afternoon, Tired of Waiting for You, Waterloo Sunset, Village Green Preservation Society. Ray Davies wrote some of the greatest songs of all time and the evidence is right here... Buy it, cause it don't get any better dan' dis!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Kinks collectors item, March 9, 2002
This review is from: Ep Collection (Audio CD)
This unassuming little red box belies its magnificent contents. The ten four-song discs nestled inside chronicle the startling and always-enjoyable development of one of the best bands of the last 50 years. From the early essays in demented R&B on the first discs to the shimmering beauty and aching lonliness of "Waterloo Sunset" and "See My Friends" in the middle, to the fully-realized songcraft and storytelling of "Village Green Preservation Society" at the end, this box has a little bit of everything the Kinks did in the glorious first six years of their career.
The EP Collection is probably not the best introduction to the band for new fans, but for dedicated followers, it is a prized posession. The original cover art has been beautifully reprinted on each of the EP sleeves, and my copy came with a cool replica poster, albeit all folded up. It is proof indeed that good things really do come in small packages.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is great, but buy the albums instead, May 16, 2000

I will skip the babbling about how great The Kinks are. Here is the order in which I recommend buying their albums:

1. Something Else By The Kinks (5 stars)

2. Face to Face (5 stars)

3. Village Green Preservation Society (5 stars)

4. Arthur... (5 stars)

5. Lola Versus Powerman & The Moneygoround (4.5 stars)

6. Misfits (4 stars)

7. Muswell Hillbillies (4 stars)

The first five are masterpieces. "Something Else" and "Village Green" are cohesive ensemble pieces; "Face to Face" is a fabulous collection of songs. Note that this is not a ranking; this is just the order in which I recommend buying these gems.
